Formatting a 720K disk in a 3.5" drive

Applicable to
S.u.S.E. version: 4.2 - 4.4.1

Symptom:

No 720K disk can be formatted in a 3.5" drive by fdformat. The usual access (mount) is however possible.

Cause:

Since the entry for the corresponding device is missing in /usr/src/linux/Documentation/devices.txt, the device is unfortunately missing in S.u.S.E. Linux.

Solution:

Create the device:

mknod /dev/fd0u720 b 2 16

Now you can format your disk as desired via

fdformat 
/dev/fd0u720
