Display artefacts under X

Symptom:

While everything gets displayed o.k. in textmode, the picture shows perturbances under X.

Here are some common symptoms :

• The monitor stays black, in addition on modern monitors the OSD gives notice of the lack of a valid signal.

• More than one picture gets displayed.

• The picture is constantly scrolling.

• The picture is distorted (pin-cushion, trapezoid)

• The picture is too small.

• The monitor switches itself off automatically, in rare cases even the monitor gets damaged.

• The monitor is able to display the picture only for short time.

• The picture flickers and/or is unstable.

Cause:

One or several of the following quantities don't match the specifications of your monitor :

• The screen refresh rate vsync (measured in Hz),

• the horizontal line frequency hsync (measured in kHz),

• the resolution dots (measured in width x height)

• and the color depth bits/pixel (measured in bpp) .

Solution:

Reduce the refresh rate, horizontal line frequency, color depth and resolution step-by-step, until you get a satisfactory picture. A big decrease of one quantity might allow to increase another quantity. Don't use the predefined settings for special monitors in SaX, XF86Setup or xf86config, but enter the desired settings manually in the appropriate places. However given setting should be used as a first hint, which settings are useful.

Example :

 hsync 31,5 - 90 kHz predefined
       31,5 - 89 kHz
       31,5 - 88 kHz
       31,5 - 87 kHz
