Apache Webserver does not start in SuSE Linux 6.1

Applies to

SuSE Linux: Version 6.1

Symptom:

You have updated to SuSE Linux 6.1 from an older version and now the Apache Web server will not start.

Reason:

As a result of a mistake in the RPM package manager, the links necessary for starting this service in the appropriate runlevel were unfortunately not included.

Solution:

The necessary links can easily be recreated when logged in as root:

for I in 2 3 ; do
        test -d /sbin/init.d/rc$I.d || mkdir /sbin/init.d/rc$I.d
        ln -sf ../apache /sbin/init.d/rc$I.d/S20apache
        ln -sf ../apache /sbin/init.d/rc$I.d/K20apache
done
The following command can then be used to start the web server

rcapache start
A new RPM package without this mistake and with a new version of Apache can be downloaded from the following URL:

ftp://ftp.suse.com/suse_update/SuSE-6.1/n1/apache.rpm
