ISSUE:

How do I find out how many open files I have at any time ?

RESPONSE:

• Check out Lsof
• find it at "<ftp://vic.cc.purdue.edu/pub/tools/unix/lsof/>".
• if you've changed your kernel, recompile/reinstall "lsof",
  otherwise you'll probably get weird results.
• some random high-numbered port, xdm is running

        # strobe
        ...

        # netstat
        Active Internet connections (w/o servers)

        it appears that it's something to do with X and xdm.  it
        stays the same until the X server is killed/restarted, so
        perhaps i could call a "pf"-like program after X is running.
