ISSUE:
How do I find out how many open files I have at any time ?
RESPONSE:
# strobe
...
localhost unknown 12905/tcp unassigned
# netstat
Active Internet connections (w/o servers)
Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State
----- ------ ------ ------------- --------------- -----
tcp 16 0 localhost:12929 localhost:22 TIME_WAIT
tcp 82 0 localhost:12932 localhost:smtp TIME_WAIT
tcp 1 0 localhost:6270 localhost:6000 TIME_WAIT
tcp 1 0 localhost:4718 localhost:12905 TIME_WAIT
...
# lsof -i
...
xdm 1091 root 5u inet 0x00f24c0c 0t0 TCP*:12905
X 1093 root 5u inet 0x00f24c0c 0t0 TCP*:12905
...
it appears that it's something to do with X and xdm. it
stays the same until the X server is killed/restarted, so
perhaps i could call a "pf"-like program after X is running.
