UMT Configurator
UMT Configurator is designed to allow users to customize their UMT settings. While customizing the settings, the Configurator provides you with a brief help reference directly in the window you are using. Some settings may be difficult for you to define yourself. In these cases, refer to your system administrator who may help you to configure the software.

 
This is the main window of the Configurator. Through the pop-up menu, you may choose the topics to set up them.
File topic contains options that allow you to manage configuration files. In UMT Configurator, you may create a number of configurations, and then load them for UMT depending on your needs.
General topic contains some general options. Mostly, they are the programs that must to perform different services during UMT sessions.
Transport topic consists of some options that controls the routing of your incoming and outgoing mail messages.
MIME topic allows to configure the default parameters to be used while a new message creation.
View topic allows to customize the look (colors, fonts) of UMT software; to define the contents of message header; etc.
Help topic provides quick access to the help system of the software. Use it whenever you face any problem while using UMT.
The description of options included in the topics follows.

FILE topic
 

File topic contains options that allow you to create a set of configurations, save them as configuration files, and then restore these configuration if necessary.
It includes Load, Save, Save As, and Quit options.

Load option permits to load an existing configuration file for UMT.

Save option allows to save changes in the configuration file being edited.

Save As option is to be used when you want to create a new configuration file.

Quit option finishes the session of UMT Configurator.

 
This window is the standard UMT window for file selection (for Load, Attach, or Save As options in the software). On the right, there is the list of parents; on the left -- the list of files stored in parents. Scroll bars allow to scroll the list in order to find the desired file. In the lower part, there is the full path to the file shown.

 
Exit Dialog window appears on the screen after you press Quit button. In the window, confirm or deny the exit.

The second topic in the main menu is called General. It contains a misc of parameters.

Check New Mail On Start switch

The switch may have one of two states. When it is turned on, UMT will check for a new mail each time you activate the software. In the other case, it will check the mail when you will press Check For Mail option in UMT, or automatically, in a predefined periods of time.

Mailbox option

The option allows you to define the file to serve as your mailbox. Usually, this file refers to the users login name and has to be located in /usr/mail; /usr/spool/mail; or /var/spool/mail directory. If you are not sure which location is correct or that you may set the option yourself, ask your system administrator to help you.
 

Editor option

The option allows to select an external editor for editing mail message in UMT.
 
In this window, you may define an external editor you would like to use for editing messages in UMT software. Each time, when you will start to edit a text message in UMT, the external program will be called.
If the editor you will use, is an X Window system-oriented one, merely type the path and the name of the program into the entry string, for instance: /usr/local/bin/emacs (emacs is the name of the editor, and the string before is the path to the program).
If the chosen editor is terminal-oriented (for example, vi, etc.) put the command that starts the editor, for example: xterm -e your_editor_name %s. In the string, your_editor_name is the name of the program, you have to type. When activating the editor, UMT will automatically substitute symbols %s with the filename to be edited. If %s symbols are omitted, UMT will append the filename just after the name of the editor.
It is recommended to define the full path to the editor.

Print option

The option allows to define parameters of printing mail messages onto your output device. UMT software supports PostScript fonts, so you have to define the file that controls these fonts metrics. On the other hand, you have to define the printer settings. An additional option allows you to enforce the message to be deleted after you have it printed.
 
In the upper entry field, type the path to PostScript fonts metrics. In the second field, type the settings for your printer. If you have difficulties with setting the options refer to your system administrator.
If you would like to delete messages from your mailbox after they are printed, turn on Remove File After Printing switch.

Time Zone option

The option allows you to select your time zone. Each message is supplied with the time it was sent. To define the time zone is necessary if you want the time in your messages to be correct.
 
In the window, select your time zone. If your time zone is not included in the list, use Append button. After this, the special window for defining a new time zone appears on the screen.
 
In New Time Zone window, type the new time zone name. In Hours and Minutes entry fields, type the offset from the GMT (Greenwich Meridium Time). Note that hours and minutes values must consists of two digits exactly ! Depending on the location of your place, use positive or negative values for the offset from GMT. If necessary, refer to your system administrator.

Language option

UMT supports several languages for the user interface. Select the language you would like to communicate with the software in the special window.
 
Also, UMT software allows you to add and remove languages from the list. To do this, press Edit button.
 
In the window, you may remove a language from UMT Configurator and to add a language again. Moreover, UMT provides you with the ability to use your native language even if it does not included in the default list. To attach a new language, select Append button in the window.After this, New Language window appears on the screen.

 
In the window, type the name of the new language. In Filename entry field, type the file that contains the messages translated in your native language. To select the file, use Browse button.

 TRANSPORT topic

Transport topic includes options that are designed to select the manner and set up the settings using which your mail will be sent and received. These options are quite special, so you are recommended to ask your system administrator to set them.
 

Deliver Agent option

The option allows to select one of two ways of sending mail messages. There are two possible variants exist:
 Sendmail: the external SendMail program is called to send your messages;
 SMTP: your mail is sent using Simply Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP).
 

POP3 option

The option is designed to set up parameters for POP3 protocol. The following settings have to be defined:
 POP3 Server: Internet address of the server your POP-server is located on;
 POP3 Service: The symbolic or digital name of the port the access to POP3 Server is organized through;
 POP3 User: The login name of the user for POP3 Server;
 POP3 Password: The password of the user for POP3 Server;
 History Limit: the maximum number of messages identifiers defined for UMT to not retrieve them again from the mail server if they were not deleted.
 
Leave Mail On Server switch indicates whether the received messages will be deleted on the mail server after UMT gets them, or not.
If Use POP3 switch is turned on, Post Office Protocol (POP3) will be used for receiving your mail messages. Otherwise, the mail will be received through the mail box on your computer.

SendMail option

The option allows to define the settings for SendMail program if it was selected as the mail sender.
 
In Path to SendMail field you have to define the full path to SendMail program location.
SendMail options field may include special parameters of activating SendMail program for this mode.

SMTP option

This option allows to set up SMTP service if it was selected as a mechanism for the mail sending.
 
In SMTP Server field specify the name of the server that will be used for your mail sending.
SMTP Service field is the symbolic or digital name of the port that provides the access to the SMTP server.
SMTP Timeout fields defines the time period UMT waits for confirmation from SMTP server that the outgoing message was accepted for sending. If in the period of time there is no response, UMT renders error message to the user.
 MIME topic

MIME topic represents a set of options for Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions. It allows to configure the default settings to be used for a new message sending as well as to define external programs that will process different types of attachments.
 

Body Defaults option

The option allows to define type of the message body, that is practically considered by UMT as a special attachment. The window below contains a set of parameters for different types of text files: plain, enriched, rich, etc.
Type parameter indicates the type of the text.
Charset parameter shows the standard of keyboard codes used for the message body.
 
Encoding parameter defines the way of encapsulating of the message body for sending. It does not mean any security goals. The following types of encoding may be used within UMT:
 
8-bit encoding is the default one; it means no coding of the message body.

MailCap option

UMT provides an ability to select external programs to process different types of attached files. The MailCap window allows you to define such programs, to add and remove these programs and to indicate their destinations.
In Xterm field, specify where the terminal program (such as xterm) is located. The program will be used to run text-based external components viewers and editors.
In Xterm flags field you can set up options for Xterm program. Filename in options should be represented as %s.
In the list window below, you may add and remove entries to mailcap search list. Mailcap file will be searched according to this list.
 

VIEW topic

The topic allows to customize the look of the software, and the format of the message headers.
 

Colors option
The option allows to set colors for different categories of the user graphics interface. The list of categories includes:
 Attachment
 Size
 Header Handler
 Header Value
 Header Special Field Handler
 Header Special Field Value
 RTF default color
 RTF Background color
 Subject: Field Name
 Subject: Field Value
 Reply To: Field Name
 Reply To: Field Value
 
In Category pop-up box, select the category you want to customize. The name of the category is shown in special box. Using Red, Green, and Blue sliders (RGB-sliders) select the color you want the category to be displayed with. The current color is shown with the large square at the center of the window.

Headers To Show option

The option allows to select the fields that will be automatically included in the headers of your mail messages, both outgoing and incoming. Message header may include the following standard fields:
 From: indicates the author;
 Subject: shows the subject of the message
 Date: shows the date and time the message was sent
 To: indicates the recipients;
 indicates the recipients, copies of the message were/will be sent to;
 BCC: indicates the recipients, copies of the messages will be sent to without informing other recipients.
 Reply To: shows the address to reply on the received message.
 
Using Remove Selected, Insert Before Selection and Insert After Selection buttons, define the set of fields necessary for your work, and the order they will be placed in message headers.
Show Full Header switch allows you to quickly set the default order and the full set of fields for message headers in UMT software.
Other field field provides you with an ability to add new fields to the set of headers fields.

Short Header option

Short header is a shortened message header used for showing the list of messages inside a folder. Like the full header, the short headers fields may be customized, and their order may be changed.
Short header may include the following standard fields:
 Name: the text string defining the title of a field;
 From: indicates the author;
 To: indicates the recipient;
 Delimiter: a set of symbols that is designed to separate fields;
 Subj: the subject of the message
 Date: the date the message was sent.
 
Like in other similar windows, use Remove Selected, Insert Before Selection and Insert After Selection buttons, to define the set of fields that suit you, and the order they will be placed in message headers.
The next window allows to set up positions of fields in the short header. The short header is placed horizontally, so you may specify the length of the fields the short header consists of. For an object of name type, you may also define the symbolic string to serve as the title.
 

Header View Format option

The option allows to define the format of the header fields, so that, their colors, names, as well as colors and names for values of fields.
 
In the string, you may enter RTF line, in the order shown on the picture. The first %s will be substituted with the field name color; the second one with the field name; the third %s with the field value color; and the fourth -- with the field value itself.

Attachment option

The option allows to select external program to process (view, run, etc.) different types of attachments possible to be used in UMT software. In the window, there is the list of attachment types distinguished by UMT. Attaching a file within UMT mail manager, you would have to indicate the type of the file to be attached from the set below. The following types of attachment may be used in UMT:
 Plain Text: usual text files;
 Enriched Text: enriched text files;
 Rich Text: richtext files;
 HTML Text: special text files defining URL (WWW) pages;
 GIF Image: graphics files in GIF format;
 JPEG Image: graphics files in JPEG (JPG) format;
 TIFF Image: graphics files in TIFF (TIF) format;
 Octet-stream: a sequence of octet codes, a type of binary file;
 PostScript: special format for text representations;
 Basic Audio: sound files in Basic format.
 
Using Remove Selected, Insert Before Selection and Insert After Selection buttons, you may define the set of attachment types you would use, and their order in the list. Using Other Type option you may add to the list new types of attachments you need.

Reply option

When you reply a message, UMT may insert at the beginning of the message references that point whom you are replying and at what date and time you had received his message; as well as other information. Also, it is widely used to mark quotations from your recipients messages with a special symbol, to distinguish the quotations and their depth from the new added strings.
 
Header Format String is designed to define the starting string of your replying message that may contain information on the person you reply to and the date and time you received his message. %s parameters define the header field that must be substituted to the location.
Quoting String parameter defines the set of symbols that has to be used to mark quotations in your outgoing messages.
Use Quoting as Default switch allows to make the quoting the default option when you reply a message.

RichText option

UMTs viewer supports richtext file format. The option is designed to customize the fonts for operating richtext files. Using the special window you may select a set of fonts to be used while working with richtext files. Sets of fonts may be defined separately for some categories:
 Default
 Bold
 Italic
 Fixed
 Underlined
 Bold Italic
 Header Default
 Header Italic
 
For each category, the corresponding set of fonts has to be sorted according to fonts size in the decreasing order. There is the special entry '.', above which all fonts are 'bigger' and below which they are 'smaller'.
Use Remove Selected, Insert Before Selected, and Insert After Selected buttons to remove fonts from the list and to change their order.
Other font and Browse buttons provide an ability to add new or removed fonts to the list.
Cyrillic support switch allows to operate cyrillic fonts in UMT.

Help topic

 
The topic provides access to the help system of UMT. It contains the following fields:
Index: the index system that allows you to find quickly the issue on the topic you would like to learn more about.
Help: help texts themselves. They are linked to each other with the system of mutual references with respect to the subject of each text.
About: the option contains the information on UMT software developers and distribution rights.
