--- Documentation for the Linux version ---

                       --- NEWS! NEWS! NEWS! ---

- I don't really have much free time just now, so I'm letting this thing
loose and praying. The source code is a mess and will probably not
compile. If you want the game with no hassle, download the binary. Also,
there is a version of Mikmod in there (unmodified, just the routines packed as
a .a archive file) for which I can no longer find the Makefile. It shouldnt
be so hard to reproduce. Finally, all the data files are packed into
audio.one and data.one and may be unpacked with the ooex extraction tool.
Anyone who feels like mantaining the game should write to me, and Ill try to
give any help needed. I wont be doing much myself though since I no longer
own a computer.
That with registering still holds - if you like the game, you are very much
encouraged to send a contribution. I'm still hoping to be able to claim at
least one registration before the game is two years old! Since this is the
full game, you no longer get sent a copy of the thing. Address to send
contribution to:

  Michael Thayer
  Neckarhalde 8

  Germany

E-mail address if you want to try to squeeze something down the phone line:
try one of darth.v@ed.ac.uk, michael.thayer@student.uni-tuebingen.de,
thayer@tuebingen.mpg.de - one of those should work! Write in English,
French or German. Please don't write to ask why you get ``GFX error'' or
something when you are not in 256 colour mode... But do write if you want to
mantain/release a modified version of/base a new game on Terroid.
- My web page at Edinburgh is out of date: since I am no longer
immatriculated there, they deleted my login, but for some reason they left
the account as it was. If anyone wants to put up a proper home for Terroid,
just say!
                                                        -MJT

                           --- Was NEWS! ---

- In this release of Terroid, I have entirely rewritten the graphics system
under X Window. It should now be a bit faster, and you can give it an extra
boost if you reduce the virtual desktop size under XFree86 with an
accelerated graphics card.
- In the next release I plan to write my own (hopefully faster) sound
system. I think I will also rewrite the music a bit, it's a bit lame...
- I'm planning rewriting the game for Linux-GGI when I have a chance to try
that out.
- This game is shareware. If you like it, you are encouraged to register it
(see the file REGISTER). But if you don't like it that much, I would be very
pleased if you would drop me a note saying what you didn't like. Thanks!
- Shameless plug: I am looking for part-time work writing music for other
video games. If anyone out there is interested, please contact me. This is
my first attempt at 'composing', so assume it can only get better from here!

                                      Michael Thayer

                      --- System requirements ---

To run TERROID, you need:
  a 486 processor
about 3mb of hard drive space
  4-8 mb of RAM
  Linux 1.2.13 or above
X Window version 11.6 or above in 256 colour mode

On a slow computer, you should probably turn off the music, and perhaps lower
the detail level, from the 'options' menu.

                          --- Installation ---

If you wish to install the game for the whole system, copy the file
'terroid' to the directory '/usr/bin/', and the files 'audio.one' and
'data.one' to '/usr/games/terroid/'. Otherwise, make sure that you run the
game from the directory in which it is installed (say, ~/terroid). Start the
programme 'terroid' to play the game.

                             --- Story ---

You are alone! Your home-planet has been destroyed by the people from
XRIMA. Only YOU can free the Orbians - which has been taken to XRIMA -
from death and slavery.
Blast your way through space, orbit, planet surface and the megacity on
XRIMA and free your people!!!

                            --- The Game ---

TERROID is a classic-arcade game made by us to bring the quality of R-Type,
SWIV, Wings of Death or Lethal Excess to your workstation.

This is NONE of all these XXX-level just-look-on-the-screen-and-hold-the-
firebutton-games with two different enemy-types and a little-big-enemy-
boss every five levels.

You even will have to use your brain sometimes ;-)

TERROID offers 9 levels filled with action, explosion and (of course)
hundreds of different enemies, 2 bonuslevels with a 3D-flight through
rings, mines and bonusitems and a training-game which guarantees endless
gaming-fun on your way to the top-highscore with an intelligent level-
generator.

                        --- Playing the Game ---

To play the game, press "SPACE" on your keyboard until the start menu
appears. To start, select "Game Start" and press "SPACE" again. At this
point, you may choose your difficulty level - press "A" for a beginner game,
"B" for easy, "C" for normal (if you want a high score, choose this!) or "D"
for training. NOTE: training is not available in the demo version.

In the first three modes, your aim is to pass through and survive the nine
stages of the game universe in order to reach planet XRIMA and free your
people (sounds almost biblical, doesn't it?) At the end of each stage, you
will have to defeat the guardian who bars the way to the next. You may also
gain points and weoponry by destroying enemies you meet on the way. You have
three chances to complete the game. If you fail, but have gained enough
points, you will be given the chance to sacrifice 50 000 points in order to
continue the game.

[The demo version is limited to two levels, to enable you to evaluate the
game - and see if it works on your computer! If you are playing the demo
game, see the file 'REGISTER' for information on purchasing the full
version.]

The training game is a test of your capabilities - you must survive streams
of enemies coming upon you for as long as you possibly can, and find out if
you are up to the task before you...

                          --- Game Control ---

The keys are:

Move: Arrow keys/Joystick
Fire: "SPACE"/Button 1
Bomb: B/Button 2
Pause: P
Music: F8
Screenshot: "R-SHIFT"

Joystick control is as yet unsupported in the Linux version, and the music
is slightly shaky.

                         --- The status-bar ---

On top of the game-screen you see your ships status. The red bar indicates
the ships hull strength. The blue lamp shows your weapon state, the yellow
one is lightened if you have got a bomb. Your lifes are displayed in the
middle of the bar, the highscore-points right. If you approach a guardian a
strength-bar will appear on the bottom of the screen. It shows the
enemies-energy and allows you to see your hits and the damage done by them.

                         --- The bonuslevel ---

After finishing level 3 and 6 you will get into a 3D-bonus level. You just
have to fly your ship with the CURSOR-keys through EVERY silver ring (also
marked with an arrow in front of them) and avoid ALL mines. You can (on
your way through the rings) collect some of the bonus-items.

                        --- Your high scores ---

If you achieve a high score, you should try for a place on our Internet high
score table -

  http://www.informatik.uni-oldenburg.de/~miha/terrhsc.html

To do so, copy the file ".terroid" in your home directory to "HISCORE.DAT"
if you are under Linux, and e-mail "HISCORE.DAT" to

  michael.haar@informatik.uni-oldenburg.de

The table is currently empty - seize your chance!

--- Some tips for the game ---

1. As your blue mainweapon needs some time to reload you must decide
whether you need firepower or just a lot of shots flying around. Always
keep an eye on the statusbar - the blue lamp shows the status of your
   reloading weapon.
2. Destroy the missile-launchers and other cannons before they can fire.
3. To avoid the homing-missiles try to move in a circle around them on the
screen until they run out of fuel and explode - but be careful as you're
   not alone.
4. Collect all the bonuses you can - they give energy, new weapons, points
   or lifes.
5. Avoid the black-death "bonuses" - they will do you no good.
6. Use your smartbombs careful and try to save them for the guardians.
7. Watch your back.
8. Remember what is where in each level, so that next time you play that
level you can better anticipate the enemy reaction.
9. Have fun!

                         --- Any Problems? ---

I would be surprised if there weren't. This game has been tested under
i486 Linux with 12mb RAM and a CL 5429 graphics board, and a couple of other
computers. Linux is more reliable than DOS or Windows (thankfully!), but I
still expect it to crash on most systems. If it does, please send a full
description of how the problem came about to me (Michael Thayer), if it is
not already on the bug list (make sure you are running in 256 colours):

E-mail is prefered. I understand English, French and German.

Known bugs or incompabilities:

- The screen sometimes goes funny, due to missing files. Try pressing "SPACE".
- Speed is not yet very regular. I'm working on it...
- The music goes wonky during loading.
- The game will only start in 256 colour mode.
- The control is poor (on my 486).
- The music is pathetic, I'll try harder next time. You can switch it off...
- And there are a host of others which I currently forget.

I am working on fixing these. If you find any other problems, please contact
me!
