Overview :

TransAOL is a PC based application to be used with the Pilot from US Robotics and America Online.

It allows you to send the Email written on the Pilot, and to download any messages you received through AOL. In fact, you can download any of the messages stored in your Personnal Filing Cabinet ; Email as well as Newsgroups messages.
It has been tested with America Online V3.0 and V2.5, US and international version.

TransAOL is compatible with the Pilot based application "Email" from StingerSoft (http://198.70.114.128/stinger/stingersoft.cfm)
I suggest you backup your "organize" directory, before using this program.

The unregistred version of this program will ramdomly put "TransAOL --unregistred--" instead of the body of the message.

System requirements:

• An America Online account
• A Pilot from US Robotics

Setup :

During the first start, the program will launch the Setup window.
Set the correct AOL and Pilot directories. Then choose the AOL user name you want to use.
Click on Save.
You will then have to choose in the combo boxes a Pilot User Name and the categories you want TransAOL to operate in.

Instructions :

You can use TransAOL in automatic or manual mode.

• In manual, select the user name and categories you want to use for this session, select the messages you want to transfer in the Pilot Memopad and press the "Mail" button/icon.
• In automatic, set the "Automatic Transfer" in the setup window and let the program do the rest. At the selected time, TransAOL will update the selected PFC folder (you will need to set the "Load unread messages on start-up" option) and will start a transfer.

A - Main interface

This interface has 3 main parts :

1. Your PFC (Personnal Filing Cabinet),
2. The messages selection side (right side),
3. The Main controls - Pilot settings

1- Your PFC :

Main PFC list : this list shows all the folders of your AOL Personnal Filing Cabinet. Click on a "plus" sign to open a branch, click on a folder name to select a folder.

"Show subfolders messages" button : when you click it, the program will list all the messages included in the selected folder and in all its subfolders. The button will be rename as "Hide subfolders messages", to go back to the previous state.

"v" button : use this button to enlarge the PFC window. Click on the same button (changed to "^") to reduce it.

When the program exits, the opened folder is saved and will be reopen at the next start-up.

2- The messages selection side (right side)

Two lists : one containing the opened folder messages and the other one containing all the messages to be imported to the Pilot ("Pilot Inbox").
Double click on a message to view it. Use the buttons below the list to select the messages.

Use the Arrow icons to include or remove messages to or from the "Pilot Inbox" (messages to be sent to the pilot memopad)

Press the "START" button to launch the transfer.

Press the "Update" button to update your PFC file (in case you made some change in AOL while this program was running)

Press the "Setup" button to configure TransAOL.

HotSync button :You have probably noticed that after a HotSync the memos are not in the order they have been entered. To avoid this, the Hotsync should be set to "Desktop overwrites Pilot". This is the purpose of this button. But the program can't handle it if you have never customized the HotSync in the "Pilot Desktop" by yourself (one time is enough). The program will prompt you to if you try to use this option without having done the above procedure.
BE AWARE : when HotSync is set as "PC overwrites Pilot", all changes made on the Pilot (memopad) since the last HotSync will be lost ;so synchronize your Pilot if necessary.
If you click the button another time, the HotSync will be set back to "Synchronization". TransAOL will automaticaly set it back to "Synchronization" before leaving the program.

3 - Main controls - Pilot settings

Main controls : Select the categories you want the Pilot to interact with. The "Sent Mail" category is disabled as long as the "Move sent mail" option is unchecked.

Pilot setting : you will find here some of the options described in the "options" section of this file.


B - Format of an outgoing message written on the Pilot :

Begin a memo with the headers which are "To:", "Cc:" and "Sub:" or "Subject:" (case doesn't matter). Then leave a empty line, and write the text of your message.

The header "To:" is the only one mandatory. Insert 2 carriage return before begining the body of the message.

The headers "A:", "Sujet:", "An:", "Kopie:" and "Thema:" also work (for international users).

Options :

Main options:

• "Send only" : By default, the program downloads and sends the Email during a session. If you just want to send and not to receive any incoming email, check this option.
• "Receive only" : Check this option, if you want to receive the incoming email and not to send any email.

Before Transfer:

• "Purge InBox category" : Checking this option will allow TransAOL to delete all the memos in the selected "InBox" category before the transfer.

After Transfer :

• "Mark AOL messages" : By default, TransAOL doesn't mark the incoming email in the AOL incoming flashmail folder after the transfer. By checking this option, TransAOL will mark all the downloaded Email. Check this option to avoid duplicate entry.
• "Delete sent mail" : When this option is checked the messages on the Pilot are deleted after being sent.
• "Move sent mail" : When this option is checked the messages on the Pilot are moved to the selected "Sent Mail" category after being sent.

Setup window additional options :

• "Automatic Transfer" : Enter the time you want the program to start an automatic transfer. Use 24 hours format.(e.g. 13:00 )
• "Load unread messages on start-up" : When TransAOL is started up, it automaticaly add to the "Pilot Inbox" list all the unread messages of the folder opened when you last quit the program.
• "Signature" : Insert here the signature to be inserted at the end of each outgoing PilotEmail. (1000 characters)

Notes :

• To back-up your aol files, copy the aol "organize" directory. To backup your Pilot files, copy the "memopad.dat" file
  
• The incoming messages may optionaly be marked in the incoming FlashMail folder, but TransAOL can't delete them.
  
• To send your email through AOL, you must start the America Online program after the Email has been transfered using TransAOL OR if the America Online program is running, after the transfer, select the "guest" screen name (or any other but yours) and go back to your screen name. This is a way to force America Online to refresh its file.
  
• To receive your Email correctly, the PilotDesktop program must not be running (or it must be set to another user name).
