1.0 Introduction

PalmJournal is a simple diary program that allows the user to make notes
on the PalmPilot (or Palm III, or WorkPad, or any other Palm OS device)
stored by date. Each time PalmJournal is started, the display shows the
current date's notes in a normal, editable MemoPad-like form. Each day
brings a fresh form to hold the day's notes and diary entries.

All the functions you'd expect to have available are here:

- Cut, copy, paste
- Undo, select all
- Search for text
- Go to previous date, next date, specific date
- Delete old journal entries

Please refer to the User Guide section of this document for details on
these features.

PalmJournal is shareware. If you find it useful, you must register it to
continue using it. The only difference between the registered version and
the unregistered version is that the unregistered version displays the
"About" screen upon program entry. Also, registered users receive free
upgrades to the latest released version.

=======================================================================
2.0 Future release plans

As with many new products, PalmJournal will go through some feature
evolution over time. While we can't be sure how this evolution will
proceed, there are some features we know about now because they are
currently under development. Look for the following features to be
added soon:

- Desktop conduit: will allow archiving purged records on the PC, as
as well as editing and creating journal entries on the PC

- Password protection of the whole PalmJournal program.

=======================================================================
3.0 Installation

Versions of this program from 1.2 onward use the same database format.
If you are currently using version 1.2 or later, you may upgrade without
losing your current journal database. TO DO THIS, BE SURE TO HOTSYNC BEFORE
DELETING THE OLD VERSION.

Before installing PalmJournal, perform a HotSync, then remove any older
version that may already be installed on your PalmPilot. To remove the old
version, go to the Memory application, tap the "Delete Apps..." button, select
PalmJournal, and tap "Delete". For Palm III users, select the "App"
menu from the Applications Launcher, select "Delete", choose
PalmJournal and tape "Delete".

Install PalmJournal in the usual way. Run the Palm Installation Tool
from the Palm Desktop, and select the .prc file provided with the latest
release (e.g., palmj13.prc). If you are upgrading from version 1.2 or later,
also select the PalmJournal backup database PJournDB.pdb (usually in your
user\Backup directory, e.g., c:\palm3\SculliC\Backup\PJournDB.pdb). The next
time you HotSync, PalmJournal will be loaded into your PalmPilot.

4.0 User Guide

Each time PalmJournal is started, the current day's journal record is
displayed. Note that the unregistered version first displays the "About"
dialog box. The date of the currently-displayed record is shown in the
upper right corner of the screen. Text may be entered into the journal
using Graffiti or the pop-up keyboard (accessed by pressing the little
"abc" dot in the lower left corner of the Graffiti area).

-----------------------------------------
4.1 Text editing

Tap the "Menu" button on the silkscreen area next to the Graffiti area
to activate the menu. Under "Edit" are the following choices:

- Undo: undoes the last edit action
- Cut: cuts the current text selection to the system clipboard
- Copy: copies the current text selection to the system clipboard
- Paste: pastes the contents of the system clipboard at the current
cursor location
- Select all: selects all text in the current journal record

Use these functions to move text between places in the current journal
record, between the current record and other journal records, and between
the current record and other system applications, such as MemoPad, ToDo,
Address, and any other application that supports the system clipboard.

-----------------------------------------
4.2 Scrolling/Font selection

When the amount of text in a single journal record is too much to fit on
a single screen, the scroll buttons may be used to view the entire
document. Tap the up-arrow to scroll up one line, or the down-arrow to
scroll down one line. Press the hardware scroll-up or scroll-down buttons
to scroll the document up or down by a full page.

The font selection buttons in the lower right corner of the screen control
which font is used to display the test of the current journal entry.
Since each font has different character sizes, the number of lines and
columns displayed varies depending on the font. Use the scroll controls
to view different parts of the current journal entry when the font is
changed.

-----------------------------------------
4.3 Choosing another date

PalmJournal allows the user to select any date to create or view a journal
entry. The menu for date navigation is under the "Record" menu item:

- Previous date: go to the most recent date (before the current record)
that contains a jounral entry
- Other date: got to a specific date, prompt to create a journal record
if one does not exist for that date
- Next date: go to the next date that contains a journal entry

These functions can also be executed by using the icons in the lower left
corner of the screen. The left-arrow goes to the preceeding date, the
right-arrow goes to the next date, and the double-square icon in the
middle goes to a specific date.

Note that "previous date" and "next date" only go to dates with journal
entries. Use the "other date" function to go to a specific date or to
create a new journal entry for a past or future date.

-----------------------------------------
4.4 Searching for text

Use the system "Find" button (on the silkscreen area) to search for text
in PalmJournal. This button can be used while in PalmJournal or in any
other application. The "Find" button searches all databases in the
system for the entered text.

-----------------------------------------
4.5 Purging old journal entries

To free up system memory, it may be neccessary to occassionally purge
old journal entries. Use the "Purge" menu item (under the "Record"
menu) to do this. A dialog box is presented that allows the user to
specify a number of days. This is the minimum age of journal entries
to be deleted from the system. For example, to remove all entries older
than 30 days, enter "30" and tap "OK".

Note that age is determined by the date of the jounral entry record, not
by the date the text was actually entered. For instance, if the user
uses the "Other date" function to create a journal entry for a date 45
days ago and then purges entries older than 30 days, the just-created
entry IS DELETED because its date is older than 30 days from today. Also
note that empty journal entries are automatically removed.

-----------------------------------------
4.6 Interfacing with MemoPad and ToDo

PalmJournal interfaces with the built-in applications MemoPad and ToDo.
Selects the "Export to MemoPad" menu item under the "Record" menu to make
a copy of the current journal entry in the MemoPad database. The text
"PalmJournal" and the current entry's date are added to the top of the
record for easy identification in the MemoPad application.

Suppose there is a note in the current journal entry that really needs to
become a ToDo item. Simply select the text and use the "Make ToDo Item"
function under the "Edit" menu. If no text is selected before the function
is activated, an error message results. Also, if the selected text is too
big (more thatn about 100 characters), an error message results. Otherwise,
The selected text appears as a priority 1 item in the ToDo list, where it
can be modified as any other ToDo item (without affecting the original
journal entry, of course).
