Mattson Message-Id: <9311040146.AA07102@SSD.intel.com> To: mpi-forum@cs.utk.edu Subject: Fortran binding In the MPI draft, section 2.4.2 it states for the Fortran 77 binding "All MPI names have an MPI_ prefix and all characters are capitals. You can't do this. Fortran-77 is case insensitive. Fortran programmers will ignore this binding so it shouldn't be there. In fact, this brings up a philosophic issue. In my opinion, a binding to a language standard means just that. You choose to live by the standard by the very nature of what you are doing -- i.e. a binding. Therfore, if the language standard doesn't include case sensitive identifiers, your binding can't either. You can suggest it as a point of style, but that's very different from a defined binding. One last point. Fortran style uses the case of identifers freely to provide information to the programmer. For example, I have worked on a number of commercial codes where the base version was all upper case, and any changes made in-between program releases were in lower case. It sounds a bit sloppy but actually works quite well and is a rather common sort of thing to do. So your binding is unenforcable in terms of the languge standard and flys in the face of common (or at least frequent) practice. --Tim ------------------------------------------------------------------ Timothy G.
