Attached below is version 2.7 of "haines in graphics", the Standard Procedural Database package. Very minor changes, including some bug fixes, but since I refer people to you for this package, it's worth keeping up to date. Thanks for all your efforts - it's truly a great resource, Eric Haines, erich@eye.com ------m theo Thu Dec 13 10:46:22 EST 1990 Subject: conic plotting May I put your conic bundle in netlib for general distrition? (I think the answer is yes, but I want to be sure there was no misunderstanding.) There's a problem here running Xplotter. I'm using an NCD X terminal connected to an SGI 4D/240 running the MIT distribution of X11R4 and get: $pyxis Xconicplot < con X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operati on) Major opcode of failed request: 53 (X_CreatePixmap) Minor opcode of failed request: 0 Resource id in failed request: 0x8 Serial number of failed request: 27 Current serial number in output stream: 32 A quick look in the X manual suggested that the most likely cause of this message would be a zero width or height, so I tried again: $pyxis Xconicplot -W300 < con X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operati on) Major opcode of failed request: 53 (X_CreatePixmap) Minor opcode of failed request: 0 Resource id in failed request: 0x8 Serial number of failed request: 27 Current serial number in output stream: 32 Actually, I'll probably convert this anyway for my own use to a graphics intermediate language (like ped produces) so that the output fits into my larger graphical environment. Best wishes Eric ------m theo Thu Dec 13 11:58:38 EST 1990 I just tried the Xplotter again, this time on SGI's console (which I believe runs X11R3) and it works. There's a lot about X portability that we all have to learn, I guess. We can use all the publicity we can get as long as it is not extremely unfavorable!!! Indeed, X is less portable than it is purported to be. We had quite a few adventures with it over the summer. Attached is part 1 of 2 of the SPD (Standard Procedural Databases) package, which is called "haines in graphics" on Netlib. I'll send part 2 of 2 in a separate note. Please replace the old version in Netlib with this one. I'm happy to say that the SPD software has been getting use around the world, with a number of research papers using these test scenes for proving the usefulness of various algorithms for efficient ray tracing. The latest version adds the teapot (the original is at the Boston Computer Museum) to the set of scenes. Thanks for all your help in making this package available, Eric Haines p.s. to Jack: the first version of SPD 3.0 that I sent you on Friday has gone through some slight changes, due to the (late) comments of a beta tester, so please have this version replace it. Part 1 of 2 follows. ------m uunet!dartvax!eye!erich Fri Jan 4 09:47:50 EST 1991 From-: Eric Grosse ehg@research.att.com 908-582-5828 To-: uunet!dartvax!eye!erich Date-: Fri Jan 4 09:46:25 EST 1991 Subject: SPD 3.0 Sorry for the holiday delay in installing your code. I will answer your questions now. I am without occupation since I retired at retirement age from a university in 2003. I made the computer graphics Plotter by myself. Hence I am the sole author of this software. I would be very grateful to you if you could place this software in the public domain.
