Chris Paige has completed the bibtex-ing of our bibliography. (As you probably know, the original was i my own style.) Anyway, we'ree set to go. How do we proceed? I've never done anything like this. The file is about 200K long. Chris has written a preamble which follows. Perhaps you can make further suggestions. Best wishes, Charlie Subject: bibliography That's great! Just mail me the file and I'll install it. The instructions sound clear enough to me, but I'll test them out just to be sure. When it's done, I'll send you mail. Thanks much. The updated version was issued as an ORNL tech report (ORNL/TM-10998) and is maintained in bibtex format. It contains a couple thousand references on vector and parallel algorithms for linear algebra and PDEs. -Mike ------m indigo.EPM.ORNL.GOV!mth Tue Oct 16 23:01:23 EDT 1990 From-: Eric Grosse ehg@research.att.com 908-582-5828 To-: indigo.EPM.ORNL.GOV!mth Date-: Tue Oct 16 22:59:16 EDT 1990 Subject: find ... in linalg Jack got the Ortega Voigt bibliography for netlib some time ago, and at your suggestion I just added it to the search file. Mike Heath mentioned that you have an updated version of the Ortega and Voigt bibliography; netlib's copy is dated Aug 88. I'd be delighted to get your new version if you're willing, and I'd be happy to take updates every six months or year or whatever you think is appropriate. The simplest way of sending the file might just be to give it to Jack Dongarra to install on surfer there; that way I'll get the file automatically when I sync our collections. I added lots of references and redid the whole thing in BiBTeX format (it was a free-form mess when I got hold of it -- each entry separately text-formatted and no consistency!). Jack and I have talked about putting it on netlib -- I've toyed with the idea of a query server front end, so that the whole thing wouldn't have to be sent out every time someone wanted to search for some particular topic. I can email you a copy if you want to go ahead and put it on netlib (we haven't yet done that here at Oak Ridge). You might want to know that it's coming out as part of a SIAM monograph on parallel numerical linear algebra (along with two review papers). The monograph has the impressive author list: Gallivan, Plemmons, Sameh, Heath, Ng, Peyton, Ortega, Voigt, Romine. I don't know of another 150 page book whose first ten pages contain just the author names :-) Also, while I'm visiting at the Applied Physics Laboratory, I've taken advantage of their remarkably complete collection of numerical analysis references to update the bibiliography, so the roughly 2000 references will swell to probably 2500 or so soon. Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of time for updates, so this may be the last major update for quite a while (maybe forever). At any rate, that won't be ready for a while, so let me know how you want to proceed. Chuck P.S. I'll add it to the Golub+VanLoan bibliography so that "find ... in linalg" will search both. I realize that will yield duplicates, but that seems better than missing papers---and I don't hear anyone volunteering to merge the two files! Is the netlib "find" command enough of a query front end, or did you have something more sophisticated in mind? I've made liberal use of crossreferences and string macros to simplify the bibliography and, more importantly, to make it absolutely consistent as regards journal names and abbreviations, etc. Unfortunately, that makes automated commands like ``find'' more difficult to do correctly. It's conceivable that someone wanting information on a topic may get back something that is too cryptic to give a pointer on how to find it. On the other hand, even if it isn't perfect, I think it will help matters. Thanks for the interest, and thanks in advance for any work you have to do to make this whole thing fly. Chuck P.S. I've written ``bibtex'' macros in GNUemacs lisp to automate things like merging enormous lists of references. On the other hand, the lisp isn't very general, since all the lists I was using were generated by me, and hence conformed to my idea of the proper format. I doubt it would be worthwhile to merge the two lists in any case, since duplications aren't disastrous. Kranich" Subject: netlib To: "Dr. D. M. Gay" Dear Dr. Gay, During the last months I have compiled a bibliography about interior point methods. This bibliography was published in May '91 as a report here at the university. Since then the bibliography is growing from day to day, and therefore the May-report is out-of-date. At the moment the bibliography contains about 900 references to talks, technical reports, journal articles and so on. Because of the enormous interest in this bibliography I am looking for a way that 'everyone' can access the most recent version of the bibliography and thereby, that the FernUni Hagen can save mail-costs. Therefore I ask you if the LaTeX- and BibTeX-files can be distributed via netlib, from time to time. In the next days I will send I. Lustig the current .tex and .bbl files via e-mail. Please contact him for a copy in order to be able to decide whether the bibliography is 'worth' to be published via netlib.
