People have been photographing graffiti as a way to keep a historical record since its inception. As a natural extension, in the early 1980s, avid graffiti artists, fans, and photographers began creating magazines to document the culture on a larger scale. As the 80s became the 90s, the graffiti culture continued to grow and the costs associated with publishing magazines declined steadily. Today, there are estimated to be hundreds of graffiti magazines, and keeping track of them all is a full time job. These pages are devoted to that documentation. To learn more about the various graffiti zines, just explore the links below.
_gz_index_header(Comments and Questions) If you have comments or questions feel free to send them along to _gz_maintainer_name. However, before sending your question, please read the Frequently Asked Questions section in order to save both of us time. I try to answer all reasonable questions and requests -- however, keep in mind that the more involved the question, the more time it takes to answer.

_gz_question
But I sent them money.
_gz_answer_begin
Again, I'm sorry, but I still don't know how to reach them. I
recommend that before you send money to any zine for a subscription or
an issue, you find some way to make sure the address in question is
still valid. Zines come and go literally overnight.

_gz_question
But I sent them a check and they cashed it.
_gz_answer_begin
Once again, I still don't know how to reach them. However, if this
happens, please contribute your experience so that we can warn others
before they become victimized as well.

_gz_question
What is all this talk of getting ripped?
How much risk am I taking in
subscribing to these zines?
_gz_answer_begin
In general, these zines, especially the older more established ones,
are quite professional and there is little risk of getting ripped
off. However, it happens, and it is a risk we all take.
_gz_answer_end
_gz_question
Is there a risk I might be tracked down and busted through a subscription?
_gz_answer_begin
It's possible. While I am unaware of any busts directly related to
subscribing to magazines, I am aware of several fake graffiti
magazines that attempted to lure writers into subscribing just to get
their names and addresses. Art Crimes as a whole is very concerned
about this practice and will do what it can to protect writers from
this sort of trickery. However, there just simply isn't the manpower
available to do background research on each zine.

_gz_question
How do I contribute information to these pages?
_gz_answer_begin
Please see the contributing section. That should answer all of
your questions.

_gz_question
I sent in information for this zine two weeks ago and it's still not
up, what's the deal?
_gz_answer_begin
I'm sorry you feel the turnaround time is unsatisfactory. However,
this is not a business, and I am not an employee. I do this work on
my own time when I get a chance. It is a task I take quite seriously,
but I have other work to do as well. Please be patient.

_gz_question
But I sent in information a long time ago.
_gz_answer_begin
It's possible your information got lost somehow. I try to update
these pages approximately once a month. Thus it may take between one
to two months for your information to make it online. I know this
seems like a long time. However, keep in mind that it is a more
difficult task than it appears. If it has been longer than one to two
months, please resubmit your information.

_gz_question
Who did the review for X? It's totally incorrect/awful!
_gz_answer_begin
The reviews are done by many people, myself included. Anyone can
write a review. If you feel a review is unreasonable, and you have no
direct affiliation with the magazine, I encourage you to contribute a
better one. These zines are moving targets and it is hard to keep all
the information for all the zines current, especially reviews.

_gz_question
I want to use some of the information on this page for X, is that
okay?
_gz_answer_begin
In general, the answer is yes. However, please send email so I can
decide on a case by case basis.
_gz_answer_end
_gz_question
Do you have any affiliation with any of the graffiti zines?
_gz_answer_begin
No. That would be unfair.

Who are you?

For general information about me, you can look at my home page.

Please follow the appropriate procedure:
Campus Box 5458 6515 Wydown Boulevard St. Louis, Missouri 63105If you choose to review a magazine yourself, keep in mind that a review is more than just writing your opinion of the magazine. You need to provide all of the following information:
Additionally, if the following information is available, you should try to include it as well:
Additionally, include a review of the magazine if you like. Be aware that it will probably be edited for consistency (so it looks like other reviews) and content (no censorship, just removal of fluff). If you are submitting information for a zine which you edit, you should submit an objective free-form description of the magazine instead of a review.
You can submit magazine cover images as well (through email). However, try to use a high resolution and a good image format (GIF or JPEG at 800x600 or so is excellent) -- I will worry about making sure the image is small enough in size for use online. Grainy images are not of any use.
When you have finished with the above, please mail it to _gz_maintainer_email. _gz_listitem(Updating or Enhancing Existing Magazine Information) If you have corrections or new information (including new reviews) for existing magazines, you can just send mail. Make sure to indicate which magazine the information pertains to. More importantly, make sure that your information is in fact more current and accurate than the information already available online.
Please follow the guidelines mentioned above for submission of magazine covers. _gz_listitem(Removing a Magazine) Magazine information is never entirely "removed" from the graffiti zines list. Instead, the address of the magazine is changed to "out of print". If you know of a magazine on the list that is now out of print but still has its address listed, send mail.
