The index files vary, but if you sort your DBM or text data you can put out a DBF whose physical order is the order of records desired, thus eliminating any need for an index. XBase file headers are documented in: ftp://oak.oakland.edu/oak/SimTel/msdos/dbase/dbasefil.inf. There is source code in C to read and write unindexed XBase files also in the SimTel DOS archive. A translation into Perl should not be difficult. -- SP .
