@triz The problem is there are several notions of equitable that are themselves in conflict and impossible to reconcile without robust discussions involving non-computer scientistshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jIXIuYdnyykI've made the focus of my ML work to enhance rather than replace human judgement with the understanding that only humans are equipped to make the necessary tradeoffs and even then not all humans.

@publius @triz While this true, I think many projects would benefit in getting input from the non-engineer stakeholders.

@publius @triz I think you underestimate the very real incentives in an organisation for engineers and management to not have ethical discussions. I say what needs to happen but the incentives will need to be enforced from outside the organisation.

@publius I want to shift the focus from something so centred on the engineers. Yes we should demand more from them. But, if I'm saying hey before selling software to the police maybe talk to community leaders over how they feel about that. The stakeholders won't always be people in your company. They won't always be the people with the money. There is a role to play for community organisations and asking they be consulted before the city buys some tech.

@publius Putting the onus on engineers also has a paternalistic air as it implies only engineers know how best to prevent a technology from harming people. I have fairly hard evidence that engineers are bad at anticipating the harm some technology can do particularly if the people don't look like them. That's why I recommend external organisations (which should include engineers) lead the charge and legislation be used to make them official stakeholders.

@publius I don't oppose engineers having the tools to make sound ethical decisions. I'm saying that knowledge necessary to do so will not always be available to the engineer, and again there are real incentives to keep engineers from making ethical decisions.Without systemic changes, it simply doesn't matter how good your engineer is. They will not prevail. They will not identify who their technology harms. They will not have the political power to tell their manager to fuck off.

@ijyx It depends on how you do so. In either case you should make a backup of your system before you install any OS

I wish there were cleaner ways to recover from conversations online that get accidentally awkward.

@rysiek I love the snark in the “Why is top posting frowned upon?” question with the answer first.

Let's be honest. Online leftists are more hostile than fossbros in teaching newbies. This would be more of a big deal if most significant activism weren't offline.

My wife decided that the best way to learn Russian is to have me read children books outloud to her.Do you have any favourites growing up? Or modern classics? Looking for something at the level of something like Dr. Suess / Reading Rainbow.

@cjd But how is it a strawman? It describes a system of economic relations that has been hegemonic since the early-modern period.

@wolf480pl @cjd I think between all the classics a reasonably clear picture emerges. Is it perfect? Hardly. Is it better than "ppl get to own stuff"? Hell yea!

@cjd Most of my attention has been on worker-cooperative movement. I think they strike a nice balance between idealism and pragmatism. You have companies where workers get a real control in their workplace and it's something that can be built right now.

There is a tension between treating social media as a broadcast medium and a discussion platform. Both are valid modes of communication but only a discussion platform is conducive to community building.Broadcasting encourages a consumer mentality, centralisation on popular brands, and then monetisation of those brands.

@clacke @douginamug @alcinnz @josias @be I think the intention is build on the principles of the FSF and try to understand why we are still morally failing with how we develop software.I've seen lots of great insights here and I think there are good insights from Elinor Ostrom can be harnessed.

Hey @trwnh in the reply FEP you mention that you see replies and comments as different. Can you articulate why you think that distinction is important? It seems like making it would lead to a more complex proposal.
