@rudolf just had the same experience...very confused as to why they would launch without local and federated timelines.Picking an instance doesn't really mean anything if you can't see the toots from fellow members. I wonder if this got rushed out so that people from birdsite have somewhere to go.

@digdeeper Presumably, this is to prevent fingerprinting (the more things you have installed, the more unique you are).I'm sure it's more accurate to shoot for something in the middle: a plugin or two to block all the junk, but not so many that you're able to be identified as a unique user.

I've slowly been trying to transition off Gmail, but I feel like I chose the wrong place for my new home.Protonmail is nice, but I absolutely hate working with the bridge locally. I was also a dummy and told people my pm.me email, not an address one of my domains...so moving to a new service is going to take work.Has anyone used fastmail? I'm debating switching to that (with a custom domain so I'm not locked in again)

@revk if you happen to have something that can scan for BLE devices (a cheap esp32 works great), it can be pretty helpful to just explore the characteristics.From a security perspective, Bluetooth feels kinda sketchy (imo)

When you're under tight deadlines (always) it's easy to slip into the mode of "this code is fine for now, we can come back to refactor". But that refactor work rarely happens.I'd like to think it's possible to work quickly without accruing a lot of tech debt, but I'm not sure how to teach folks that skill. What even is that skill? Discipline? Forethought?Whatever it is, it's likely not a hard technical skill, but an attitude. Those are hard to help people adopt.
