It's either because it's cheap or it's the sort that's subsidized from the ground up. There's a lot of corn grown and subsidized for, so that's what gets thrown into a lot of food products and candies (I.e. high fructose corn syrup). Similar argument for soy, canola, and wheat. Those vegetable oils and wheat flours are so omnipresent that almost any snack off the shelf uses them as the main ingredients. These types of vegetable oils are also known for inflammation when they're constantly consumed. On the other hand, the use of GMO insecticides from companies like Monsanto and their product RoundUp were heavily lobbied for, and they essentially got excessive legal protections for use of their products. That being said, I believe most of that stuff can be avoided by adhering to products under organic labels. As for the excessive growing of unhealthy plants, what do you think we should be growing instead? I know we have a specific climate that benefits certain crops over others, and there might be a specific demand in place for these existing crops. However, do you have suggestions about what crops could be substituted for these mostly unhealthy foodstuffs (especially the vegetable oils)? I'm not too knowledgeable on potential replacements and would be interested in hearing others' thoughts.

Marjorie HeI did some fanart for once. I recreated @trinity1214's character Marjorie He in 3D! I haven't attempted a human-like character in like 7 years, so it felt pretty different. It was a good review of the fundamentals. Doing the hair was a learning experience. I avoided hairstyles for practically all my characters. I poly-modeled the hair using curve objects, but I still found it especially challenging to get right. Fortunately, her character sheet was really well defined, and that brought with it a clear vision all the way from start to finish. If you didn't know her already, check out her stuff! She make's cool character art both original and fan work for many patrons here.

Not gonna lie, that was a fun experiment. A weird but appropriate reinterpretation of Rien. The style reminds me of Maplestory. Maybe I should go redownload it and get snapshots of my old tricked-out characters from that...

ExpressionsDid the expressions in the first row. What better way to fill out the pose library than with creating some expressions? It was fortunately straightforward to put most of these together, and it was a good check on the flexibility of my model and rig. Even with the rigged model on hand, I still had to perform some fixes: extra cheek bones on the rig to prevent weird deformations at extreme lip shapes, some controls for the size of the eye pupils, and another control to put some waviness in the lip needed for expression 1H. Still, there were a few odd adaptations to get a 3D non-human character to fit a 2D expression list. Expression 1G in particular wasn't something that could be entirely fulfilled (now that I'm looking again, lips need more work there too). Not like I could easily reduce the eyes to a single point like on a more simple facial drawing, but I compromised however I could there. Expression 1H and 1I had some features digitally painted on after rendering, but I think those turned out well. This row contained all closed-mouth expressions. I'm sure I'll have a mouthful of issues whenever I decide to make the open-mouth expressions starting at row 2.

Really neat. Interesting to see an expanded snapshot of how things were almost a 100 years back. Also, looks like everyone wore a hat back then, but most of those ones are kinda out of style now except for more formal occasions.

Randomized BooksLearning Geometry Nodes like I should've started long ago. However, Blender's always updating, so maybe it's better I waited. This graph just keeps getting more complicated.Make a simple book with some parameters to control the size: easy and straightforward. Need a lot of random ones lined up against each other? A little more planning and complexity.Want a few of them randomly leaning at an angle? Lots of understanding rotational transformations and trigonometry.Want to make sure the ones that are leaning don't accidentally lean against *nothing* because the randomized book next to it was too short? Still haven't figured that out. We're now on getting the shaders and materials prepared, but that involves creating the texture/UV mapping from scratch. Maybe not for everyone, but I do enjoy these kinds of challenges.

Re-posing QuestionsWIP, working on the next poster. Sometimes after rendering, I still find some tweaks to be made to the pose. I made him lean a little more forward, and that seems to look more "active" and interesting. I guess that also falls inline with always giving your character an "S" shape to their poses. When any of you have to re-pose a character in a drawing, what's your process for doing that? In my case, I have a model-doll that I can simply tilt forward and only have to worry about the time it takes to render. In the 2D-drawing case, I imagine it's more difficult. Do you try to warp/transform the images or to completely re-draw important parts?

RienCharacter poster for Rien. With his many fins and trusty collapsible fishing rod, he's ready to tell you lengthy stories and unnecesary metaphors about life on the sea!Wasn't compositionally sure about having the fishing hook come towards the edge of the camera like that, but it kinda looks he's hooking you in. Worked better than expected.

Art Vs Artist 2023Here's the recap for this year. Didn't make any new OCs, but I got a new style figured out. I combined the flat-shading I learned a year before with the photo-releastic style I usually did to get this neat hybrid, and figuring out a proper 2D style like this was quite the milestone for me. I also developed tools for myself that help to seamlessly switch between them too. It's weird to think the majority of artwork this year was done in the latter half. I was focused primarily with 3D printing and assembling my personal workshop for the first half. There is also some car work that I'm hoping to catalog on here at some point, but I wish to incorporate that in a more creative way and am still planning that out. Still, there was a lot achieved this year artistically that I'm grateful for. I've gotten back to sharing work more regularly and have started sharing the effort itself more. Even have someone special that I'm sharing work with for projects equally special! I hope to keep that momentum going and bolster the creativity that many other creatives here have done for me.

So I got tagged here, but I was also tagged earlier by @evergradeartistry. Thanks to you both! Also, thanks to @crimson_owl for the original post. It's been a while since I've seen *any* movie, but I'd say Home Alone 2 and Legend of Frosty the Snowman that played on Cartoon Network as a kid.Home Alone 2's sequence of traps against the criminals is always a knee-slapper to rewatch. Some of them though probably would've killed them in real life, but that does bring the excessive cartoonish humor to it. The Legend of Frosty the Snowman is a bit unconventional, but I remember it having a wholesome ending. It also did a good job at making school administrators look like crap too lol. Not a lot of people liked it though, and I'm not sure if it would hold up for myself if I viewed it again today, but it's still a cool memory. Here's a few additional friends to join the fun: @alexttabor@animextremex@carlychannel@gasmaskbro

Here's a few WIPs.-A bird character that needs a completely new rig done. Also need to finish out the shading materials. -A car model that still needs an assortment of smaller pieces modeled. Also needs materials-Procedural Arches for a much larger architectural project. The first two have admittedly been dormant for a while, but looks like there will be time to work on them again very soon.

Happy New YearHappy New Year buds. May the growth of our skills continue to flourish. Rien is fully enjoying the celebrations, but Altaira is all out of wack from the excessive noise. The fireworks and Rien's party horn are apparently too much this time.

Seems like a convoluted word salad for dismissing the need for "fundamentals". While there might be some justification for just "getting work done", you might not adequately create something good & clean without understanding how things work from the ground up.
