@chedieck@video.qoto.org Luke is being empowering by telling people that they can have control over their life. You are implicitly thinking of people as subhuman when you you interject yourself saying that "they" can't help themselves or that they are held back by institutions or whatever ― you are saying that they are animals that can't control themselves. I'm not Luke but from the video the impression I get is that he thinks people has been mislead and doesn't hold much contempt for the people that have problems. God by his grace has given us free will.

@chedieck@video.qoto.org Institutions? I meant to say drives and/or brain chemistry (freudian slip). Though people not making changes with the excuse that someone is "just going to stop me anyway" is a thing that I see a lot. Classically (and still in modernity through Kant?) ― free will is literately what differentiates us from machines and animals. The idea that we have the ability to impact the world around us and move how we please. It is the foundation of all ethics because people can be held accountable for their actions. When you start talking about "addiction" then you kind of just reduce a person to a a thing that can be controlled like a machine. You give this chemical to this person which causes him to do that ― you are not talking about something that has agency at this point. This is why I said that you are being dehumanizing. Also don't be too quick to assume that I haven't had my own problems with substances. You don't know me or my past. Luke's first video on this actually helped me a lot getting off my ass.

@chedieck@video.qoto.org A machine is something with a definite function. You input (x) and get out (y). When you start talking about how someone must behave when exposed to a substance or stimulant you are (by definition) talking about a machine. Input(punch) -> Output (punch back). What makes us different is that we have the ability to resist this causality and choose our own path. We have the ability to restrain ourselves (to resist temptation) and cannot be reduced to a function. The essence of what something is is not its components ― few people understanding this is the heart of the problem actually. We are not reducible to chemicals or atoms ━ we have parts of us the are incorporeal not reducible to parts― and how things are related is not a direct casual relationship that smaller parts can be meaningfully added up together to produce a larger whole. Your hormones do not say how your mood is going to be.Atoms and molecules or quantum states don't exist outside the realm of which they are useful. If the laws of physics were completely redrawn chemistry and biology (and the studies of larger scale) would not change at all.
