Maybe this is an unpopular take, but why are people getting so hung up on #chatGPT if it's still getting so many things wrong in an at times hard to verify way?Maybe my queries have just been too specific but I have never actually seen the thing say something halfway useful yet. It all sounds authoritative enough, but doesn't hold up to the smallest amount of scrutiny. Am I just asking it the wrong things? Does it get better with GPT4? I just don't see it yet. So far, what I see is another Facebook that tricks people into thinking they're smart by parrotting something the internet said without fact-checking, just on demand now rather than on the schedule of others. Is it actually useful to folks yet as a way to learn new facts/information or does it just summarize and generate clickbaity blog posts so far?

random observation but why do so very many #TTS voices make absolutely no distinction between a period and an exclamation mark when the screen reader leaves it up to the TTS voice to interpret them? Question marks, no problem. Exclamation marks ...nope. Just like a period. They are different, folks!

As a fully #blind #developer myself I am of two minds on this. If this was a world in which I could have nice things, i'm all for this. An AI that styles stuff for me so I don't have to? Yes, please. My #CSS is dreadful and I simply don't have the bandwidth to improve it at present. But this is not that world, and blindness organizations sending me inaccessible bills when they want money is a clear indication that I cannot, in fact, have nice things a lot of the time. The fact I couldnt'make an account on a website to find a catsitter this weekend because of an inaccessible form does, as well. So, alpha or not, train your product on best practices, or kindly get the heck out of the sandbox before you hurt the internet more than it already is hurting. #accessibility #vercel #v0 #shiftLeft

I am reading this article and see some ...creative use of the English language happening in it and I'm not sure if it amuses or annoys me. I have complicated feelings about it :)

@sounddrill @aral I can't see the original pot, why are we talking about screenreaders not being there being showstoppers? :)

@aral I mmean ... it kinda needs to be? The minute something happens the screen reader isn't aware of, that also means the user isn't aware of it. Security's all well and good, and screen readers can ABSOLUTELY be weaponized as malware, but that's like saying the screen's bad for showing all the things. Having processes communicate through all sorts of communication protocols to the screen reader is what most Linux architectures do, and it leads to fantastic clusterfucks like this one: https://github.com/calamares/calamares/issues/470

I'm honestly a little confused with the rhetoric we see today about changing your browser. We have Chrome, but Chrome = bad because it's eating the internet and decimating privacy. Then we have Firefox, which added AI to their browser and recently bought some kind of ad company so ... presumably also = badWe have Brave which according to some is ran by a bad person, therefore = badMicrosoft Edge, owned by Microsoft. = badThe majority of other browsers I know are based on Chromium which kinda sorta is also Chrome therefore = bad.I've ran out of browsers... which one's good these days?

Likely too little too late at this point but can we now PLEASE cut it out with the barely functional homebrew react-based select alternatives pliss?

This is a cool concept. Tricky bit is that we're expecting AI to get it right. AI often does not get it right :)

I got a question last night that I really appreciated, because I think it's one of those questions a lot of people ask themselves, answer themselves and never think about again. The question was "Wouldn't a blind person rather produce a podcast than a video?"Many a person would grab the pitchforks at this point and cry #ableism, but I feel that would be supremely unconstructive so I answered the question, albeit with a minor helping of snark. This is still me, after all.I'd be curious to hear if anyone else is willing to challenge their assumptions, so consider this an #AMA or #AskMeAnything.Question about #blindness, how a #blind person would do X or IF a blind person does Y? Go, you shall not be yelled at. Embarrassing question? I've seen it all, DM if you're worried about backlash or propriety. And yes, asking about wiping is permitted :P

I don't know the specifics of this API but from the article itself, this prefetch only happens if you hover your mouse over a link. So if you don't use a mouse this may actually do nothing, unless keyboard focus is also considered a trigger, and even then, a screen reader's virtual focus most definitely won't be. Soooo .... yes, but also no .

Welp ... I was just informed through a Slack DM that I will no longer be working at the place I'm working at in two weeks' time. That is, evidently, how we handle that now. Not entirely unexpected as the writing on the wall was evident, but still not loving that approach for reasons I haven't quite worked out yet.If anyone needs help with their #accessibility from someone with both native #screenReader experience and a coding background, keep me in mind I guess :) #fediHired #layoffs

I should probably slightly amend that statement. If someone needs help with their #accessibility from a native #screenReader user with a coding background, keep me in mind.If you want your product to be more #accessible as a new year's resolution, also keep me in mind. i won't even judge if you drop the resolution two weeks after. If you've received complaints your product isn't accesssible but decided they weren't worth addressing, please realize you're deliberately choosing to exclude a bunch of people, decide you want to be a better human than that, and THEN keep me in mind :)
