Erm new instance so I guess it's time for an intro post: was at Mastodon.lol, sad to see it go. I like long walks on the #beach checking out new #breweries (and spending excessive amounts of time at my favorites), #reading #cycling, #photography. I'm (slowly) trying to learn #Korean, a bit of fancy #cursive, and how to #draw and #sketch #mosstodon, #ThickTrunkTuesday, and #Fountainpens are favorite follows.

All right for #ThrowbackThursday I have a story about my grandmother and the difference between hipster and mid-century culture:I was visiting my grandmother and commented on some liqueur recipes in her personal collection. She tells me a story about the coffee liqueur: they used to be too poor to buy Kahlua and it was expected that you'd serve something when you had guests, so she made her own with this recipe. One day her guest says "Dolores, I don't know what it is, but the Kahlua is always so much tastier at your place."My grandmother is HORRIFIED. Her guest must know that she hasn't BOUGHT the liqueur, she made it, from scratch...like a peasant. She will lose social standing over this.I'm dying laughing at this point."Grandmama, if I made my own coffee liqueur now, I'd be insufferable about how homemade it was."

Long story short, I made the coffee liqueur (it's great, you should do it if you like Kahlua) and I went hunting and found the magazine (thanks ebay) she'd gotten the recipe from. She was tickled that I was interested and, dear reader, let me tell you the magazine is surreal as someone who was born a decade later:How does Governor Reagan deal with inflation? Who the heck is this Betty White chick who is married to megastar Allen Ludden?

A friend and I have been talking about going to Zzyzx since before covid and we finally did it. The abandoned resort has been turned into a desert research center under the aegis of Cal State University Fullerton, but the bit outside is stunning blotch of green between desert mountains and a massive salt flat. Definitely worth it if making the drive between LA and Las Vegas, maybe not as a standalone trip. https://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/21414#RoadsideAmerica #photography #desert #California

@grammargirl Oh thanks! I knew that French Fries weren't French (thanks early '00s jingoism), but didn't know how they'd gotten the name.

@grammargirl Back when I was slinging sandwiches and coffee at a local cafe, I found that just saying "You look like you want a ham and cheese on croissant" would always get an immediate decision from folks who had made it to the register and still looked adrift. They would respond with "oh that sounds great [thank you for not making me make another decision today]" or "No, I want a tuna on rye" it seems like whatever that effect is is at play here too.

@grammargirl when I read this I hadn't noticed it previously and then heard someone keep saying it about the speaker kerfuffle on NPR today. Baader–Meinhof strikes again!

@futurebird my pandemic project was learning to write nicely as a lefty and so picked up fountain pens. Depending on the style of writing and the ink, I might keep a Kleenex (no moisturizer) or a paper towel folded or cut to size and rest it under my hand while I'm writing. It flattens really wet shading inks so if I'm using those I'll do the proper hovering on my pinky knuckle or whatever, but for lazy daily writing it's fast, clean, and easy and I've started doing it with pencil and ballpoint.

@LibrarianRA Ok, I'm intrigued by the Frozen Desserts option. Not sure I'm intrigued enough to buy Kool-Aid though.
