@aral Some days I feel like there is not much left to fight for or, at least, way less than what we would think. It's so depressing to see how swiftly rights we took for essential are being thrown away, with the cheering of so, so many people convinced it is the right thing to do.

@kzimmermann 5, 1 for everyday stuff and the rest for each project I am working on on a longer time frame, each using its own wallpaper (thx, #Xfce) because it's useful to instantly know on which I'm... and it's pretty ;)

I have been using Debian 11 since a little while before its official release. I am no power user but I find it so good (considering my own needs, of course), fast, hassle-free and so reliable that I have completely stopped looking for alternative distros. The only thing that is sorely lacks imo is a :debian: sticker to put on my laptop 😋 😉 (even though I made a donation. I would rather purchase goodies directly from Debian than from a 3rd-party seller) @ademalsasa

User profiles in @libreoffice Writer are so incredibly useful for, say using various pen names or for working on two or more completely different books (each using its own independent settings, dictionaries and stuff). As a selfpublished author, that alone made it worth for me to ditch MS Word. Add to that Writer's own styles management (much better than Word's even though it's not flawless) and I'm left wondering why I didn't jump ship sooner.Plus it works under GNU/Linux, Windows & Mac 😉

@thenewoil @thenewoil At least, Gizmodo were honest enough to admit they share the same 'shitty ways' (if not the same gross margins) as the NYT.

I would not advice reading newspapers or listening to French radio/tv. Beside less than a handful, they're all utter trash. But there are/were amazing movies, books and songs too ;)

@kzimmermann If you don't mind classics, a selection of French authors or translated public domain ebooks: https://www.ebooksgratuits.comYou could do worse than read Maupassant (amazing short story writer, go read it now), Tchekhov (of course), Zola, Victor Hugo (amazing everything, imo), Balzac (I keep him always close at hand), Proust (never succeeded in reading him, try every 3-5 years though), Tourgueniev, Hamsun, Cervantès. And the best novel ever written bar none: Anna Karénine, de Toslstoï.

@kzimmermann But there are many more. Not mentioning children books (they taught me a lot, plus they're often great books). Try Saint-Exupéry Le petit prince. If you're more on the essay/academic kind of work: http://classiques.uqac.ca/classiques/ Podcasts, I mostly listen in English, sorry. In French, I quite like this French history Youtube channel but have not listened to it in a while: https://www.youtube.com/c/Histony/videos.Hope this helps. Note that there is quite a few fcking amazing living French writers too ;)

@smartbrain @fsf This is not a problem. This is freedom 0 (The freedom to run the program as you wish, for any purpose). And, yes, this freedom implies to let anyone, even those we may dislike/despise, use the very same software we use.Without that freedom, there is not much of the four freedoms left, imho.https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/programs-must-not-limit-freedom-to-run.html

@kzimmermann Not sure about the bulk part of your questions, but wouldn't KDE connect do just that? Let you easily transfer files from/to the phone on a computer, using a nice GUI?

@mntmn My 10+ years old Thinkpad is still doing fine running the latest Debian. But you're one of the very few options I'm considering for my next machine. You'd probably be the only one were you to offer another CPU (I don't have money to spend on a device that I could not use as my daily driver). And no, I don;t mind the thickness ;)

Clickbait/buzz/shit posting is not #journalism.A first step in the right direction could be to stop calling journalists those who write such poor content, even those who own a press card. Are they unhappy for Mastodon not being a drop-in Twitter replacement? And they 'threaten' to leave? Good riddance. That should leave some room for more competent authors.
