People who enjoy programming often do so because it provides a feeling of mastery that they are lacking in other areas of life. This is similar to an eating disorder in motivation and in that it can look healthy to a point, but where eating disorders turn inward and become self destructive, the desire for control that drives a programming fetish can turn outward to economic and social activity to assert mastery and wreak havocThat's why I'm adamant about building mechanisms for communities to control their online lives and for games to escape the control of their makers. There's a specific impulse that I'm denying myself and anyone who'd contribute code to this effort
