This is one of the more impressive bits of absolutely insane overdoing it that I've ever seen: (ab)using Blender's raytracing engine to make a simulated film camera, with simulated real optics, to take simulated photographs of scenes.I can't even imagine how much GPU time went into these, but it's a delightful labor of love. Or maybe just as a way to keep warm during the long, cold Canadian winter.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YE9rEQAGpLw

@qdot It's moments like this, when I have a reply that would be marginally appropriate if locked under the correct friendslist, that I miss LJ. But, noooo, the Russians had to ruin LJ to keep it from being used for internal dissent, so I can't make wildly tasteless jokes with impunity.

@simon … except anything else that depends on binaries in ${PATH}.Call me a grumpy old fart, but I have a Dockerfile for pretty much every non-trivial thing I've built in the last 5 years. Everyone who uses it gets the exact same environment, with the exact same deps, etc etc etc.But I'm also someone who pins requirements.txt entries to versions, after having dealt with Rails apps in last half of the 00s.

Wow. This is a whole new level of SEO-baiting. It's 15 pages printed, with a half-page table of contents (24 entries!). The prompt for this term paper?"How much juice is in a medium lemon"The answer is "2~3 tablespoons." You'll find that on page 4.https://thejuiceryworld.com/how-much-juice-is-in-a-medium-lemon/

@qdot On the contrary! I decided against including a link to her author page, because it's a litany of AI-sounding intro paragraphs, except they're posted infrequently enough that I think she might actually be writing this sad SEO-bait the hard way. https://thejuiceryworld.com/author/cindy/

@masukomi @simon @alexgarciaxyz I came here to add exactly this context.LLMs magically create great bits of reference-plus-tutorial material for people who have a passing familiarity with a thing, and are absolutely Russian Roulette for anyone else.

@vees @goz I came here to post exactly this. Though I only kind of remember what the black ribbons smelled like; the color ones were the ones I was always super excited when my dad changed out.We got a PC in ?93? and an HP inkjet. In an olfactory sense, the cartridges were a lot less satisfying. Printed out pictures looked a hell of a lot better, though.

@simon Now to add "a one-sentence summary of what it does" next to the search results, for those of us who can't keep track of all the arbitrary codenames for our myriad half-completed projects. 😅

Got a LinkedIn notification for an open "Senior Cyber Engineer" position.Try and say "Senior Cyber Engineer" out loud. If you can say it without sounding like the villain from an 80s cartoon show, congratulations on being more grown-up than I am.

@Jason_H_Abbott @vidar And thus the ever-classic meme "A/S/T" was invented (or wased hadinvented, to be grammatically correct).

@simon FWIW, I tried following the instructions there in a fresh venv and got `Error: 'gguf' is not a known model`. `llm --version` shows 0.12, not sure if I'm missing a plugin or something that adds this.

@simon Yes, the largest problem with Substack is their relative newness. That lack of a reliable, long-term track record is why Choosy Nazis Choose Stormfront™ to host their screeds.

@ZachWeinersmith I did a double-take when I saw the bonus panel; I really expected there to be a set of balls dangling at the origin.
