@futurebird Lasius definitely seems hairier overall, and more flat ovals for bodies. Formica I agree look more athletic, their heads also seem longer and with more taper towards the mandible and they generally have bigger/more agressive looking mandibles. Some color clues, maybe Lasius lighter, Formica often very dark. The heads look very different to me, but that's just scanning through those photo sets, I would bet my correct ID rate is no better than blind luck. @cascheranno

@futurebird that's interesting because as I was looking at them I thought there was something going on with the back of the head where it connects to the body but I couldn't nail down what I was seeing, I thought it was the shape of the back of the head but then it wasn't consistent enough to call a feature@phryk

@futurebird I have never made a cheese sauce this way. I always make a flour roux, extend it with cream or milk into a mother sauce (Bechamel) then add cheese. I never get lumps or cheese separation unless I leave it on too high a heat for too long. 100% on the onions. One good way to start is to brown onions in butter, add flour and cook until the flour is light brown, then add the dairy.

@futurebird I like this idea, because after 4 years of high-school French 30 years ago, I find that I remember the grammar structures and simple verbs but there are many many nouns and generally less frequently used words that I wish I knew.

@futurebird I have ants in my garden. I will not be getting rid of them... because it would require me nuking my entire backyard with chemicals, and still might not work. The ants are EVERYWHERE. Under every rock, every scrap of cloth, in every garden bed. They do sting if you try and move the rock they're hiding brood under, but so what? They were there before I started a garden, they will be there after. Much rather figure a way to get rid of the potato beetles than the ants.

@futurebird It occured to me because I recently dicovered a nest of carpenters in my porch - by seeing them occasionally at my sink. They are very polite and don't seem to come in the house uninvited... unless they are thirsty. And the lore in home repairman circles is that carpenter ants prefer damp wood, but I don't know if this is actually true or just trade myth.
