@ZachWeinersmith I saw a post recently about the fact that Director commentary tracks have basically disappeared as a medium. They used to sound like a cool idea. Now the audience just thinks it sounds tedious to pay that close of attention to one film when there are a million other channels with nothing on competing for the half-attention.

@futurebird So far everybody I've seen claiming "AI consistently gives me accurate information" has actually been saying "I asked AI something I don't know about, and I found the responses plausible but of course I didn't do a lot of boring research to verify any of it because that would have negated the convenience of asking AI."So at this point "The Terminator" seems like an optimistic view of humanity's fate with AI.

@foone It's one of the many things that has gotten way worse about using a computer over the last 30 years.Basically, you want AppleScript from the early 90's. It worked pretty well for automating GUI apps for like ten minutes, then everything was web apps and half-baked cross platform toolkits and Apple stopped caring about automation and moved to focus on walled gardens. We have strayed so far from the light.

@foone I understand why it's happening, but I still find it funny.Given it's an OS feature and the OS is in control of it, MS could certainly have given access to the image if they wanted. Even granting that it was incidental, the result is still that the MPAA has more privacy on my computer than I do, and that's a bad look. "What was the thing I watched with an elephant?" is as plausible a use case as anything else they have suggested.

@futurebird I totally did the stereotype thing and worked on my screenplay at coffee shops. It's kind of nice to have a place to go, and a place to leave when you've gotten through enough for that day. I have tinnitus so being in complete silence is way more annoying for me now than it used to be, even though I really don't like being in a crowd.

@futurebird @LinuxAndYarn A statistic I ran across recently is that is most groups, people will accept whoever talks the most as the leader. Talking the most is a stronger indicator than even gender.Trump has learned he gets great reactions from groups of stupid people by just flooding the zone so he seems to be in control of it. People are still surprised that it works.

@futurebird that's why all cults love thought terminating cliches. It's a very standard pattern for organizing an in group against the out group. You are special because you have special knowledge that allows you to exclude this person and defend yourself from their words, and you should feel good about succeeding at that.

@foone I think S-100 and "business-y" micros were more likely to be metal. Home micros were the plastic ones.DEC, Cromemco, this thinghttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MCM/70#:~:text=The%20MCM/70%2C%20manufactured%20by%20Micro%20Computer%20Machines%20in%20Kingston%2C%20was%20encased%20in%20a%20wedge%2Dshaped%20metal%20box all had metal products, just mostly forgotten because they were rare and expensive and un-nostalgic. The pro market competed with established metal cased minicomputers and pro electronics.

@foone It's amazing to me how much work has been invested in making computer UI's worse over the last few decades.GUIs were basically fine for many tasks in the 90's, and ever since then it's just been mostly... stuff, rather than clear improvements.

@futurebird We might just be bad at reading alien emotions. The other half of the stories may well be, "I saw a homo sapiens and I turned grey with fright and my head puffed up in terror, and my eyes instinctively turned black from fear, all before the homo sapiens even saw me!"We just don't notice because we've never seen ana lien that isn't stressed.

@futurebird You can keep embedded digital clocks in devices sync by turning everything off at your circuit breaker panel at midnight twice a year. This is genuinely easier than setting a half dozen weird devices individually.

@GossiTheDog It is interesting that Florida is perfectly and happy to build a bunch of publicly funded housing, shockingly fast, waiving all red tape and budget issues, as long as it's cruel.

@futurebird @jpaskaruk Film and Television aren't the core of American culture that they were in the 90's. There's just a lot of inertia in treating them that way. It has absolutely been hollowed out and is a shell of what it used to be.A *really* popular scripted TV show is watched by ~3% of Americans these days, and 1% is quite good ratings. In the 80's, a big show could pull in over 50% because everything was less fragmented.
