@grammargirl I am reminded of my mother in college ~1942 at the point of having to choose a major, having originally decided on French and being told, now that France had been conquered by the Nazis, that the French language was basically doomed.... and thus she was persuaded to switch to Spanish.(suffice it to say these things don't always go the way one would expect...)

@clauclauclaudia @markmetz @krupo The hotel in question was literally built in the MIDDLE of an interchange between the NJ Turnpike (which is probably the biggest highway in NJ, which is saying something) and NJ route 3 which was one of the feeder freeways for the Lincoln Tunnel (which itself is one of only 3 ways to drive into Manhattan from NJ). The roads were in existence (and carrying heavy traffic) for DECADES before the Meadowlands complex or the hotel was built. So this is just straight-up Developer Stupidity. NJ mostly isn't this bad.

@reflex "will try to do this because they don’t want their information to be public"What's funny about this is it's actually easy to look up everyone who has registered at a police precinct (i.e., once you have all of the police precinct addresses, it's a relatively simple database query to find all of the corresponding names). So essentially by doing this, they have called attention to themselves -- whereas if they had simply registered at their home addresses they wouldn't be so easily findable. But yay, yummy Class C felony.

@lowqualityfacts Actually, I think this has been tried already. Or at least, it's my theory for where the Book of Job came from.(i.e., somebody, back in the BC(E) period when they were still accepting new books for the Hebrew canon, decided,"Hey, I think I can get them to accept this book that points out how stupid all of the rest of it is and makes the whole mess self-destruct."Did. Not. Work.

@lowqualityfacts that's actually almost sensible.(People keep saying it would be so cool to have an identical twin, but I tend to think it would suck...unless the telepathy thing works, in which case it would *really* suck)

@solarbird I'm told (*) that the ballroom is a distraction and that the actual point of this exercise is to expand/modernize the East wing underground bunker, which is, presumably, a whole lot of underground construction which also tends to cost assloads of $$, though whether this accounts for the $300M I don't know.(*) some skepticism warranted since this explanation involves way more strategic thinking on TFG's part than he's demonstrated being capable of in the past, though this could be *other* people doing the strategic thinking (as in, "we're going to need something a lot more impregnable than we currently have for when the shit truly hits the fan...")

@Lydie possibly stupid question:This business about installing without TPM is mainly about "Here's how to get your old hardware that lacks TPM to work"?... as opposed to "TPM is Evil (*) and one should disable it if one can"?Meaning if one *does* have newer hardware, is it worth disabling TPM or is that unnecessary-FUD? or futile?(*) given that "trusted" in these contexts is often more about *them* being able to trust that, say, DRM crap is going to continue to work, but I'm not clear on whether TPM is an instance of this)
