@clacke @jwildeboer Uh, all I see when I go to that link is the character string "success".

@dredmorbius Is that the origin of the word “heinous”?

@mattskala @enkiv2 This of course is a subset of the phenomenon of people feeling the (usually internal) pressure to give advice when they’re not likely to be able to help the advisee.I try to take a deep breath first and ask myself if it’s really a good idea to proceed. I remind myself that I can lose more face in the long run by giving bad advice than by demurring.

For many months now, we’ve been watching one of those condo needles rise across the East River from us, between the Manhattan Bridge anchorages from our viewpoint. Our attitude has been basically “rich people are taking away another part of our view”.Tonight, though, I have to admit it looks great at sunset.#nyc

@mattskala @enkiv2 If I realized my father felt that way, I might look into his eyes and say, “Sorry, I really don’t know enough about the topic to feel responsible in giving you advice. But I’m pretty good at web search; should I try that?”NB This is not advice.🙃

@xahlee Slow doing everything or what? Doesn’t seem to be a problem in the Windows version.

“Vessel” is a very strange word. It refers either to a structure that holds a fluid *in*, e.g., a cup, or to something that keeps a fluid *out*, e.g., a boat. The Shawarma, which is a complicated lattice, of course fails either use.

@mattskala @xahlee The heinous thing about this is, UTF-8 is a couple of years older than JavaScript.

Not sure about public awareness, but the Wikipedia page says "UTF-8 was first officially presented at the USENIX conference in San Diego, from January 25 to 29, 1993."

@xahlee Sorry, I don't know what you mean by utf8 monthly.Sure, I think js *should* have chosen utf8.

@xahlee Sorry, I can't remember when utf8 became a big part of my life. And I really have no idea whether the early JS team felt it was important to follow Java's practices where possible.I do remember that when I first encountered JS and Java, around the same time (I can't put a date on it now), I was struck by how ponderous Java was - I just didn't want to go near it if I could possibly avoid it.

@xahlee Speaking of marketing force, Microsoft was all in on utf16 early on.
