@mjg59 I for one cannot wait for the EU (inc. Ireland) to follow through on abolishing summer/winter time changes, the UK to stick with it while screaming RULE BRITANNIA in the middle of the night twice a year, and then seeing people once again discovering the EU/UK land border.

@tschaefer that's what I feared but a reboot fixed it!

I didn't go inside or even read the sign. Everything I know about Betsy Ross I learned from Day of the Tentacle and I intend to keep it that way.

A cool thing about the Fediverse is that even I, a cis het white centrist dad, can be mansplained for using a word in its colloquial sense rather than its scientific sense

In the last year or so I read an article thoroughly investigating whether the idiom[ x$foo = x ]is still needed in modern-day /bin/sh, concluding that it is not if you quote the variable. But it's surprisingly hard to search for. Does anyone happen to have a link lying around?Edit: found it! https://www.vidarholen.net/contents/blog/?p=1035

Yes, thank you, Tuba, I know how hyperlinks work in AD 2023.

@simon libsoup (the C HTTP library for the GNOME stack) broke its public API and ABI while keeping many symbol names the same, causing absolute chaos because several foundational libraries were not updated for the new API while others were updated to only support the new API. A year later, several GNOME-adjacent projects e.g. Flatpak are now de-facto only usable when configured to use libcurl rather than libsoup, surely not the desired outcome!

Bloke next to me on the tube is listening to a podcast episode titled "Are we in a masculinity crisis?" and it has taken considerable strength not to lean over, say "no" and save him 45 minutes.

@DavidDarnes You may want to update your EDFD page to remove the Reply All contact details, which must be sadly defunct by now. (Thank you for the page!)

One of the things I hate most about Git workflows which involve my patches being rebased when they are landed on the main branch is that `git branch --merged` correctly doesn't consider my local branches to be merged. I know how to write a crappy shell loop with `git cherry` to see if all patches on a given branch are textually identical to some patch on the 'main' branch, but surely someone else must have written this tool before?

I would like to complain about the hours of my life I have wasted fielding escalated customer support tickets about Zoom not working properly on our Linux distro (which for some reason is our problem rather than Zoom's despite their $24bn market cap and $1.6bn annual revenue) but I appreciate that it's not exactly the biggest thing to complain about today.

Zoom's annotation feature draws an always-on-top, fully-transparent window over the whole desktop whenever you are sharing your screen (regardless of whether you or anyone else is annotating), which in GNOME 43 (but not 47 for unknown reasons) causes it to be impossible to interact with any non-X11 windows. The workaround is to disable the annotation feature, which you can't do in the app, only in your account settings on the Zoom website.

(Please do not reply to say that GNOME 43 is 2 years old and ask why we don't have a newer version.)

Imagine being the person who, 30+ years ago, solved the problem of moving the mouse diagonally to a submenu closing the submenu because the mouse passed over another element – just add a short timeout before switching to a different submenu – and then living to see every application on the planet reimplement menus without that behaviour.
