@z @p @lev2013 It's actually kinda funny, everyone in fedi sees FSE as "that instance filled with nazis, but the admin is pretty cool I guess"

Imagine having nothing better to do than discuss politics with people whose minds are already made up on the internet

@p Politiposting is fine once and a while, and discussion definitely helps build wisdom, but doing something like that all day is just going to lead to poor mental health.Philosophy is different in that its discussion leads everyone closer to a truth, but politics puts your minds on all sorts of horrible things actually going on in the world. While it's important to not be ignorant to these things, most of the time it's impossible to change any of it, which leads to depression and a general sense of powerlessness in your own life. It's really just unhealthy in large doses is what I'm saying. But I'll give an answer to a "why" question any day to non world-shaping questions.

@z @p Some tactics are unconcious, I guess ;)But seriously though, it's just not healthy to subject yourself to (even slightly non-civil) political discourse all day. It's just a downwards spiral that leads to the inability to converse normally with anyone outside of your tiny subculture.

@leviticus @p @dwmatiz @folk πŸ‘‹In all honesty, the fediverse in general is a good example of this. But there are a few noteworthy differences between civilizations and internet communities. The big one is that people here are free to move around to find the community(ies) that best fit them, while in person, they may not be able to as easily pick up and leave their homes to go elsewhere. There's also no barrier for interracting with others here; changing instances means you can still cooperate and talk with other people from other instances. Changing a home means physically cutting contact with everyone you've connected with.People also may force others to stay in a location for whatever reason, while that's (normally) impossible online.

@crushv The fact that some people on this instance were telling me that I was "deeply unsettled by the truth when I heard it" was pretty funny. Also that I'm now uncomfortable with my ideology because I've heard a fact I never had before. Some people just like to think that their argumentative and personal skills are a lot stronger than they really are 🦐

I don't think the US needs communism, but it definitely needs a huge injection of libertarianism. The small guy needs to be able to enter into a market at his discression without a gajillion regulations.I'll probably be the first one to ever say that GDPR is a bad idea for this reason. It's better than nothing with where we're at, but we really need to be breaking up large corporations instead of forcing everyone to abide by ridiculous regulations that only the wealthiest can impliment. Break up monopolies and trusts. Stop giving out so many loans to students "in need."Voting is still useless. Start a riot or two. Or fifteen if you can.

A return to a more federated system would be great. Different states should have different cultures and laws to reflect those. That way people could choose what laws and people to subject themselves too. As it is now, things aren't really different from border to border. And moving around is hardly an option for anyone.

Absolutely fuck anyone who creates laws while "thinking about the kids." The best way for kids to learn things is through autonomy and self-reliance. Those two things aren't fully given to us (at least as much as the next person) until we turn 24 and can rent our own cars. One thing I refuse to sell out on is the notion that "when you grow up you'll want your kids to be safe too." A lot of the reason that the internet grew on me was because it was like a bastion of freedom in the house my parents confined me to. I learned so much more on here than anywhere else I was forced to be in. And that's why I continued returning.
