While it’s great to see established news agencies coming to #mastodon, I’m going to have to mute @newsaljazeera Posting every two or three minutes is waaaay too much to follow, and it’s made the local feed here on mastodonapp.uk almost unusable, tooI’m not convinced it’s an official account, fwiw, looking at what other accounts it follows

I was going to boost something neat I saw, but the toot starts with “A gentle reminder that…”, which is some passive aggressive bullshit because it’s obviously not a “reminder” at all. It’s such a random, niche thing that 99.99999% of people will never have been aware of it before now.Which is a shame, because it was really cool.

We watched Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny last night and it was (pleasantly) surprisingly not awful. I went in greatly worried after the awful Crystal Skull, but this was a lot less....ridiculous (for a movie that's based on time travel).I'd even say it was a good movie, and a fitting end (hopefully) for the franchise.

My one real problem with it, particularly as an Indiana Jones movie (as opposed to many other action movie franchises) is, watching it as an old git who remembers all the “Making Of…" feature for these style of movies in the 70s and 80s, I know that barely any of the stunts, chases, fight scenes, etc. were "real”. It's all CGI…even someone running along the top of a moving train, or driving tuktuks through crowded city streets. And that cheapens it for me; it's less of a spectacle.

It was even pretty obvious that a lot of the shots with Indy and Wombat in Tangiers were green-screened. I wonder how much location shooting was actually done? I know that some of the American city shots were done in Glasgow…

I guess what I’m trying to say is that those old movies weren’t *just* about the story (for some of us, at least). The effort and art that went into making them was almost as important as the finished product if you’re a film fan and know about practical effects, set building, costume, camera work, etc.Despite the industry changing use of CGI, Jackson’s LOTR movies still featured huge amounts of physical fx and location shooting. I doubt we’ll see it’s like again. It was an end of an era

It has come to my attention that some you out there quite like Old Computers and #retrocomputing. While digging through my cupboards recently I came across this, which is of no use to me anymore.The CD is included, never been out of the envelope in the back of the book.Could anyone out there with a #BeOS or #vintage #OReilly book fetish put this to good use? I'm happy to post to mainland UK, but will need a few £/$/€ for further afield to cover postage
