Tree, The Four Seasons In Spring is the default wallpaper in builds 4083-4093 of Windows Codename Longhorn (which released as Windows Vista in 2006). The image, taken by photographer Andre Gallant, is 1 of 4 similar shots of the same tree seen in spring, summer, autumn & winter.

Windows has an undocumented “Emergency Shutdown” feature. Though information is scarce, it existed at least as far back as Windows NT 3.51 (1995). To access it, a user must press Ctrl+Alt+Del & choose the Shut Down option. After confirming, the system will immediately shut down.

The development of Windows Codename Longhorn began in 2001, with Microsoft initially hoping for a 2003 release. In 2004, they announced its development would start afresh, owing to multiple issues with the 1st attempt. Longhorn would eventually release as Windows Vista in 2006.

Windows Home Server (2007) was a version of Windows designed for use on so-called “stay-at-home” servers. These were touted as a home backup solution for consumers. A children's book - “Mommy, Why Is There A Server In The House?” - was released to promote the operating system. 📖

It’s spooky month! 👻 And Mystery was a desktop theme included in the Microsoft Plus! software pack for Windows 95 (1995). 🔍 It included a 3D rendered wallpaper of a spooky study, a haunted house screensaver with animated *spookiness* & *terrifying* cursors & system sounds.🦇🌕

Windows has traditionally included hidden media called Easter eggs. Many referenced the team working on a particular version. In 2002, Microsoft ended the practice via its Trustworthy Computing Initiative. In 2022, a 35-year-old Windows 1 Easter egg was found by @mswin_bat (Twitter). 🤯

Windows 1’s (1985) release was delayed several times following its announcement in 1983. On 30th July 1985, Microsoft released Windows 1 “Premiere Edition” to select users in the computing industry, in an attempt to sustain interest in the OS, & to prove it wasn’t vapourware. 😬

This was the original design for the Windows 8 (2012) logo. 👀 Director of Program Management for the Windows 8 User Experience, @jensenharris, explained that the now-familiar lines were added as “we didn’t think we could get trademark protection for a simple solid trapezoid”.

Running Windows XP’s (2001) Logon screensaver in the Home Premium edition of Windows Vista gives this curious result: the OS is referred to as “Windows XP Freestyle”. Freestyle was the codename for Windows XP Media Centre Edition (2002), which this seems to be a holdover from. 👀

Windows 95 build 222, from 9th November 1994, is one of the few Windows development builds not available in English. While the Dutch, French, Italian, Spanish & Swedish localisations are all similar, the German variant features this unique background image during setup. 🌌🌎👀

Candy is an unfinished & unreleased visual style for Windows XP (2001). Originally found via source code, it seems - for unknown reasons - to be based on the contemporaneous macOS visual style, Aqua. It likely functioned to test the new visual style engine that would debut in XP.
