"AI has learned some deeply unhealthy ideas about body image and eating by scouring the internet. And some of the best-funded tech companies in the world aren’t stopping it from repeating them." https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2023/08/07/ai-eating-disorders-thinspo-anorexia-bulimia/

Trump's video interview with Tucker Carlson racked up ~75M "views" on X in its first 2 hours. I wrote for the Washington Post's live blog about why that's a deeply misleading metric that doesn't actually tell us how many people watched it: https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/08/23/republican-presidential-debate/#link-PQMIE5H7T5CANF25HMWGJSUR5Y

Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok are all looking into offering a paid, ad-free version of their social networks. But it isn't because they want people to take them up on it. I wrote about the German court case that helps explain what's really going on: https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/10/05/meta-wants-charge-users-an-ad-free-facebook-german-court-case-may-explain-why/

Amazon’s Alexa has been telling people the 2020 presidential election was “stolen by a massive amount of election fraud.” The voice assistant cites Rumble as its source. https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2023/10/07/amazon-alexa-news-2020-election-misinformation/

I love the work that I do and the people I work with. I hate the economics of this industry and the way our work is valued at a level that constantly tests the amount of shit we're willing to put up with just to keep doing it. https://www.washingtonpost.com/style/media/2023/10/10/washington-post-staff-buyouts/

I try not to complain about my job because let's be honest, I'm wildly lucky to have it. Tons of jobs suck in tons of different ways and I chose this one because the great aspects outweigh the sucky ones, for me. But what gets me is, what if you *didn't* have to be wildly lucky to make a living in journalism? What if you just had to be good at it, care, work hard, and write stories people found worthwhile? Sounds like a fairy tale, but that's how it was before local newspapers collapsed.

Our story today, w/ lots of new details, scoops & internal data on X’s loss of users, political tilt, and newly inked deal with Tucker Carlson: https://wapo.st/49cK8lG (gift link)

Today I’m walking off the job in solidarity with hundreds of my Washington Post colleagues. It's our first strike in 48 years. You can respect our picket line by avoiding Washington Post journalism today, Dec. 7, during our 24-hour strike. You can also send a letter to our bosses if you like: https://actionnetwork.org/letters/workers-at-the-washington-post-deserve-a-living-wage

This story has so much going on that it's hard to figure out which parts to fit into the headline, but here goes: 4chan trolls are using Bing AI to make pro-Nazi, Great Replacement and other racist & antisemitic memes -- and verified blue-check accounts are spreading them on Elon Musk's X, where they're going unmoderated even when flagged as hate speech, and reaching millions despite X's claims to have cracked down on antisemitism. My latest for the Washington Post: https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2023/12/14/ai-hate-memes-antisemitic-musk-x/

Props to @emanuelmaiberg at @404mediaco for being first to report on the 4chan AI hate memes back in October https://www.404media.co/4chan-uses-bing-to-flood-the-internet-with-racist-images/My piece adds new research from CCDH on how they're actually spreading in the wild--with help from X's algorithms that amplify the blue checks who are gleefully posting them and racking up engagement--and how X doesn't take them down even when reported, despite claiming to crack down on antisemitic content. https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2023/12/14/ai-hate-memes-antisemitic-musk-x/

Deplatforming is out of favor in Silicon Valley. But it works.A new study in Nature finds that Twitter's mass suspension of 70,000 QAnon-linked accounts after Jan. 6 meaningfully reduced the overall circulation of fake and hyperpartisan news on the platform. https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2024/06/06/twitter-jan-6-deplatforming-misinfo-nature-study/

I wrote about why Meta is integrating Threads with Mastodon and the fediverse -- and why advocates for an open social web are both cautiously intrigued and wary. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/10/02/meta-threads-fediverse-mosseri-mastodon-rochko/

I want to thank Mastodon founder @Gargron for taking the time to comment for my story on Threads' fediverse integration. Here's what he had to say:

Didn't get to include this in the piece unfortunately, but Mastodon has also seen a surge this month, with signups up 27% from October to November so far. From my convo with Mastodon creator Eugen Rochko (@Gargron):
