My advice, if you're new here, is to post. I'm still working on it myself. The late stages of Twitter rewarded us for posting less frequently and for posting the worst kind of takes when we did. There's no algorithm here to feed, so post what you're interested in and what you're curious about. Share the things that you care about and you'll find your communities here quickly enough.

When I think back about my earliest days on Twitter, I found my communities by posting about the stuff I knew a lot about (computer and tech stuff mostly), the things I loved (games and food and coffee) and then I listened to the people whose lives I was curious about.

Two more things that were buried in replies that I forgot. Use the boost button to share stuff that's good and/or interesting. Hitting the star does nothing for promotion since there's no recommendation algorithm here. Hashtags are super useful. Use them, search for tags for things you like, etc. Make sure you post something so your profile people who check you out an idea of what you're into. I'm MUCH more likely to follow someone here if they exhibit shared interests.

TBH, I'm still weirded out by the hashtag thing. On twitter, I exclusively used them for goofs or the occasional sponsored thing. Here people use them earnestly and to great effect.

@Kashalot Why would they set the young orangutan with loss issues up with a sick old dog?

I made some tomato soup this weekend, and wanted to share the recipe. It's soup so good I think about how good it is for an hour or two after I eat it. https://shitty.blog/2023/01/19/tomato-soup-recipe-good/#food #recipe #foodtodon

Ivory is out. It’s the Mastodon client by the folks who made Tweetbot and it’s the best of the first crop of clients I’ve tested if you’re in iOS. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/ivory-for-mastodon-by-tapbots/id6444602274

Apologies in advance, because this feels like a stupid question. But I’ve legitimately not been able to figure it out from reading these laws: Do these Republican bans on drag shows make Miss Piggy and Bart Simpson illegal?

Writing quick Steam reviews for games you like is the single best thing you can do to help their visibility. Taking 10 minutes to go through your library and bang out a handful of reviews for games with <1000 total reviews can really move the needle.

The difference between getting promoted and buried on Steam can be a handful of negative reviews. This is extra important for games that feature characters who are not cis white men. People write generic negative reviews of those games then game the meta-review layer to boost their visibility.

Normal reviews get a handful of "helpful" or "funny" tags over a period of weeks. The suspect reviews get 20 in the space of a few hours. That means that those recent negative reviews are rated "Most Helpful" by Steam, so they're shown to prospective customers first, before any positive reviews.

Reviews don't matter for games you didn't buy on Steam, so just go down your recently played games in your Library and click on the Store page button for the ones you've enjoyed. All that matters for Steam is the 👍or 👎, so if you think it has merit, a 👍 and a "I loved this game!" is enough to help.

In the time I've been working on this thread, I also reviewed a few of my recent fav indies: Poosh XL, Nova Lands, and Mars First Logistics, so it really doesn't take long.

And of course, if you played The Anacrusis and enjoyed it, a positive review on it will benefit me directly (but only if you played and liked the game 😁)https://store.steampowered.com/app/1120480/The_Anacrusis/

I don't normally ask for boosts, but I'd really appreciate them here. I think very few people realize how much Steam weights review percentages for promotion, and it's absolutely vital that players engage with that system if we want indie games to continue being viable.
