@corfiot We tried it that way and I've been a used for keeping that position. We're trying to be transparent in how we operate and what's acceptable here because otherwise I just get significant abuse from everyone. Which is amazing.

@corfiot And that's absolutely fair. It's why we wanted to be clear why we aren't going to be willing to put up with trolls but also we want to share when we get this shit wrong like we did yesterday. I'll always shout about the awesome stuff we do but it's only right to also say when we drop the ball IMHO. It's been a pleasure running this site so far and once this little blip is behind us I'm sure it will be again.

I personally don't read a great deal of mainstream news, and keep myself out of what most "Big People" say on social media because it is of no interest. My attempts at articulating that have so far failed and it's resulted in me being called some fairly nasty (And in some cases as a result entertaining) names on the network and this site. If you see someone on here posting that breaks the rules, please as a first port of call report the posts. Those reports we aim to resolve inside 24 hrs

We're very much trying to make an awesome community here, and we know we aren't going to get things right every single time, we're just trying to do our best. I really hope this thread has helped to explain our stance on moderation as well as the mistakes we made in the last 24 hours and how those mistakes came to be. We've already put steps in place to make sure we don't continue to make the same mistakes again and hope you'll all stick with us while we work through growing the community <3

For those curious, this was our AWS bill for November 2022. We only use AWS to run our e-mail services and the Media that you see on the site. The compute itself is hosted elsewhere. At the moment this cost isn't sustainable for us, so we're going to be looking at some ways to cut the cost and in the not too distant future will be moving our media to alternative hosting.

We've added tilvids.com to our #fediblock as a silence.We have observed and had reported of a trend of users spamming fake advertisements. As a result we've limited the visibility of those posts on this instance to just followers of accounts on that site.

@ArtBear @SrRochardBunson @atomicpoet Instance admin here on mastodonapp.uk. We get zero notification a server blocks us, we have no way to work out who does / does not block us and as I've said in other messages on here before we have had issues with moderation misunderstandings back in Nov of last year, and are still suffering from that due to abandoned projects being used that still list us as a site recommended to block.

@ArtBear @SrRochardBunson @atomicpoet The tools / info is currently frowned apon in the Mastodon communities anyway as it is a gateway to abuse.I'm also not sure what they've seen and they haven't engaged with any of our mod team nor have they reported anything since at least Feb as I've gone back through every report. I'm hoping this is a mis understanding or they're looking at something older because we only have 3 members of our team and I know none of us have seen such a report.

@ArtBear @SrRochardBunson @atomicpoet Absolutely, we don't want folks to block us and we especially don't want it if it's something we haven't had the ability to fix. I've re checked reports and have seen nothing from Calckey domain so either something is broken with their ability to send us reports or the report was simply never shared with us for us to do anything. As soon as we know the report info we will investigate and resolve the concerns.

It's truly disappointing to observe the latest #FediDrama gripping people around Meta joining the fedi network. With comments ranging from bizarre all the way through to suggesting people commit acts of terrorism and corporate espionage. So far the entirety of this looks to be a storm in a tea cup, we know Meta is going to try to join the fediverse but that's about it right now, and honestly we'd be stupid not to think they would sooner or later. At least they're being honest up front.

And while I have yet to form an opinion on Meta in the context of federation and activity pub (It entirely depends on just about the entirety of how they do things to join us here) let me be clear. I will continue enforcing our instance rules in the context of this, the accounts and instances enabling the content supporting terrorism and corporate espionage among others will quickly start to get removed from our federation. Hate meta all you like, don't break the law to stop them.

If you're new here on MastodonApp.UK, I would suggest taking a look at the Local Timeline, it's generally pretty active and I have personally found as a great way to find and follow other folks here that post the types of things I like to follow along with! The federated feed can be good, but for us being a (hopefully relatively) well federated server, it can be very very noisy!
