@DeveloperMemes Maybe. Maybe not. It's fun right now, but people will likely, eventually, get bored. Besides, it could be worse. People could post the ChatGPT output as their own and you'd never know it, assuming that they'd put real effort in the creation of their supposedly non-AI assisted posts.

Watching this movie trailer, I am vacillating between laughter, tears, and outright awe. While I pick my jaw off the floor, check it out and let me know what you think. https://youtu.be/8zIf0XvoL9Y

How can I be over my limit. That was my first tweet of the day. :-P Twitter is having a nervous breakdown.

There are far too many ways to publish blogs these days. The real pressure is to piggy back on Medium or Substack, the latter having attracted to seriously big names. The problem I have is that everything looks the same. Furthermore, I'm not 100% comfortable with either platform. I'm starting to lean heavily on Ghost and will be building a presence at https://freethinkeratlarge.com. I hope you'll check it out.

@hehemrin @johnmark Oh, I have my own domain, Henrik, and have for years now. This is kind of my point. In a world with so many source begging for attention, there needs to be a way to convince your audience to check you out from time to time. Hard to do without some kind of outreach mechanism (e.g. a mailing list). Medium and Substack both promise to bring eyeballs to you by different means, but typically at a cost, a cost that sometimes comes down to your personal identity.

@hehemrin @johnmark I think the mailing list (along with RSS) is a long-forgotten and underappreciated method that we seem to have collectively forgotten in favour of these platforms supposedly doing the work for us. Supposedly promoting our work. My own Wordpress site has been running under marcelgagne.com for years but it's become messy with the years, and there's no mailing list to reach out to people. That's why I'm building a new site with open source tools and Ghost.

@hehemrin @johnmark Well, if you believe them (oh, and it was Twitter that bought Medium, I believe), you do own the content, but they own the way it looks and you effectively become trapped there. As I said, my old site has grown messy, hence the clean, fresh look, with mailing list support this time. For better or worse, I'll probably keep populating the old site, for now, with anything I add the shiny new digs, but it's time to divorce Medium and Substack. Feel free to subscribe. :-)

@hehemrin @johnmark Henrik, Ghost is an open source project (MIT license) that offers hosted services, but it's completely open so you can just download and install the code on your own server to do it all yourself. They also make it easy to move from their hosted solution to your own server if you choose to do that later. It's very much like Wordpress, from a business standpoint, but built with node.js instead of PHP.

@hehemrin In normal implementations, you're deleting it from the server on the next sync operation. If you create a new folder, and it's in the IMAP hierarchy, you're just moving it from one IMAP folder to another.

Greetings! This is a humble request for you to subscribe to my new, open source, Ghost-powered blog at https://freethinkeratlarge.com. This will add you to my mailing list so that whenever I post something, hopefully once a week, you'll get an email telling you about it. This is all free, but Ghost is part of what's called a 'creator economy platform' so you'll see an option to financially support me but that's not necessary. I would be honoured to simply count you among my readers.

@tek I'm a fully bilingual French-Canadian. For years, I've done this terrible anglicized French accent to drive my mother crazy. :-) This is just the (un)natural progression of that torture.

@thatdawnperson @foone @Canageek Ye gods! Keep in mind that you're asking me to trawl deep into ancestral memory here. As I recall, these were not off-the-shelf Wyse keyboards. Dynix worked with Wyse to create custom keyboards tailored specifically for their system. Besides the Start Over/New Search, there was also Help, Cancel, and Exit. The function keys also had custom function key caps, for both public and staff terminals. I remember some being colour-coded. Again, this is a long time ago.

@thatdawnperson @foone @Canageek I just spent way too much time going back through various Web sites, looking for pictures or these Wyse 30, 50, and 60 keyboards. All I found is that everybody uses exactly the same pictures, usually with the num pad cut off, which isn't much help. Maybe I should ask some of the actual librarians who trained on these things.
