I'm sure you'll be pleased to know that the News tab in Nautilus from GNOME 1.4 (released in 2001) still shows current @lwn headlines/https://lwn.net still support whatever API/feed it's using.#GNOME #Linux #RetroComputing

I'm annoyed at Arch and dynamic linking this morning. Updates to dependencies of Shotwell (photo management software) have repeatedly broken it over the last few months. Most recently gdk-pixbuf has been switched to use the glycin backend, and now I can't export rotated images, and portrait images are rendered squished. I opened a bug, but it has been dismissed as an issue with upstream and that the switch to glycin is necessary due to the security boogeyman. 😤

I probably need to find new photo management software. Shotwell seems barely maintained at this point. Unfortunately, last time I surveyed the options there weren't a whole lot to choose from that were non-destructive.

Switched from the default Google Android launcher to the open-source Fossify Launcher on my phone. The best part might be removing the Google search bar that is forced upon you in the default launcher. So far everything else seems to work pretty much the same.https://github.com/FossifyOrg/Launcher#android

"We adopted Rust for its security and are seeing a 1000x reduction in memory safety vulnerability density compared to Android’s C and C++ code. But the biggest surprise was Rust's impact on software delivery. With Rust changes having a 4x lower rollback rate and spending 25% less time in code review, the safer path is now also the faster one."https://security.googleblog.com/2025/11/rust-in-android-move-fast-fix-things.html?m=1#Rust

End of an era.The code wasn't building on modern systems for multiple reasons, so I replaced it with a static archive.

@mntmn There is https://mace.home.blog/ that is like WINE for classic Mac OS apps. It lets them run "natively" on modern macOS by implementing the ROM traps.

@mattdarveniza yeah it's not great. Feels like they redesigned them all so they look cohesive in this image, but drained all the life and individuality out of them in the process

Oh and here's a photo from 2001 showing a NetBSD crash. The first UNIX-like OS I ran on my own hardware was NetBSD in 2001 on a cobbled together PC with a Cyrix 6x86 CPU and some memory from who knows where. It would crash under heavy load, here extracting the pkgsrc tarball, due to bad RAM or the CPU getting too hot, I can't remember.#NetBSD

Weird new computer arrived. While it looks like a regular mini-PC it has a Loongson 3A6000 CPU with 4 cores, 8 threads and a MIPS derived instruction set architecture (ISA). The aim is to install Chimera Linux on it, and have it be a test bed for building packages, and testing software compatibility. Depending on power consumption I might give it some server duties too. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loongson#LoongArch#Loongson #loongarch #loongarch64

People complain about PDF, but to print this letter I was able to convert it to PDF in System 7 using Adobe PDFWriter 3, copy that to the host, and then open and print it in perfect fidelity. Pretty neat that PDF makes that possible.

New post, the second this month! 😱🖥️ Exploring Linux on a LoongArch Mini PCI wrote about my early experience with M700S LoongArch based mini PC. Open it up to look inside, and install Linux on it. There's a bunch of pictures too.https://www.wezm.net/v2/posts/2026/loongarch-mini-pc-m700s/#loongarch #linux

Continuing to enjoy the slow crumbling of things that used to work into a heap of brokenness on GitHub. This has been happening on my phone recently.#qa #quality
