All it takes is being weirdly different and you aren't low hanging fruit / easy pickings ;-)Not going to stop a dedicated attacker, but it will cause some "arghgrrrblergh" before it's worked around ;-)

@mansr just like someone asked me a couple days ago "so i gotta ask, how many computers can you build from parts from what i can see on your desk in this zoom call"I had to start with the existential question of: what do we define as a "computer" 😜

@mansr well is an mcu a computer is really the deliniation most folks argue. RealOS or super embedded* so yeah, if we are at turing machine level "many" is the answer 😜* Where super embedded and realos destinction continues to get blurrier every year

Why is it that the *SIMPLEST* fixes that get pushed area always because of some weird corner case that took like a week to fully debug and confirm, the commit message and comment are nigh infinitely longer than the code and the code is legit removing 5 characters.

@mansr last updated in 2015 and somewhere in the intervening years looks like Android broke it's ability to run the query the way it had been, just get "network error" trying to DNS query

Part of the last 24hrs or so has involved me "experiencing" Computrace / Absolute Software's persistent firmware not-a-root-kit-thing.It's somewhat fascinating in how it works, and what it requires. The most *AMUSING* thing I've double checked is that on Windows it will auto-install the right drivers and lock up a system. On that same "locked-up" system under Linux it happily has no clue and trundles along with nary a worry nor care. This is interesting because it's clear that the "locking" requires some OS level bit to do it's magic, and that magic is clearly bypassable for anyone with sufficient information and skill. So it's all smoke, mirrors and wishful thinking. At least this has caused me to *TRY* to ascertain why this particular new-to-me laptop is reporting this. Absolute Software is following their process and contacting the previous owner, however their claim is "this could take a long time", when pushed there is legit no timetable there and my own anecdotal looking seems to indicate in some cases 6 months of pestering to accomplish things. So this whole shebang feels like an absolute shambles. If it's not resolved by Monday it's going back to the seller but I've at least started the ball for them I suppose.

Traveling with Pelican (and their ilk) cases continues to be brilliant, if sometimes slightly confusing for everyone involved. Also pulling a collapsible duffel bag out and being able to add a piece of checked baggage en route is also brilliant. The Dread Pirate has counted 2 wings and assures me this 737-800 MAX is, and I quote "*PERFECTLY SAFE DAD!*"

Yeah, Gmail is not a great e-mail provider, speaking as someone who doesn't use Gmail and is dealing with an absolutely ridiculous mess trying to get Gmail to actually accept e-mail from not Gmail. Also if you are subscribed to Vger lists, and use Gmail, please take your lack of getting e-mail up with Gmail because I'm doing what I can to get it through, but they are actively blocking it right now.

Well, vger (as of right now) no longer directly attempts to deliver to gmail/google/googlemail just to get the ridiculous backlog out of the primary mail paths. Vger (1 machine) is kicking all of that queue over to 8 other machines and letting them go try to get that delivered and queue up somewhere where it's not going to cause everyone else pain. This should, at least for now, settle out several things, but if you are seeing mail wonkiness give postmaster@ a ping and I'll take a look. Also if you are on Gmail and doing kernel dev, might be worth looking at other email providers.

@mjg59 so I ran at that in two passes, borg/borgmatic for primary backups, and Nextcloud for basically continuous syncing of things. I've been happy with that for several years now

Do I know anyone who's successfully gotten cephfs exported from a proxmox cephfs cluster into a VM?I can get it mounted, all good. It can see contents there, yay! When it goes to write it gets a "Operation not permitted" error but creates an empty file with the right name. What weird permissions bit do I have not set right?#Ceph #CephFS #Proxmox

Flagging this up, maybe someone does or knows someone who does: I am in search of a tool steel maker who can replicate some parts. Specifically Leatherman has stopped making the Style PS, and I have a tendency to burn through the little screwdrivers / nail file on them something fierce. My stashed supply of them is getting low, and replacements are well into "hey I bet I can find someone to make me a pile of parts" territory. So here's my ask: if you are a steel tool worker, or know someone who does and are willing to take a look at an existing part and replicate it as close as possible, possibly with some modifications, hit me up.Boosts welcome, I'm not sure where to search for this one!
