@alcinnzHey, we tried to stop it. I became a raving lunatic back when it was happening, but no one cared, because everyone else just had iPods/iTunes and couldn't fathom anything else.@art

@josefIt was a classic ploy to grow a proprietary product off the back of OSS, then abandon the community once the platform is successful. @aral @kaniini @MacLemon @vinzv

@josef @aral @kaniini @MacLemon @vinzv Of course companies have a sound legal and financial reason to do this, but it is obviously only in their own best interests, and is hostile to users. I think copyleft helps, but even that wont stop similar moves such as GChat, FB chat, and Slack launching with XMPP bridges, then cutting them off once they have an established user base.

@ashfurrow @bugaevc Yeah. Sometimes I wonder if people who love to hate on gradle, etc have ever used these cruder tools.

@sirI think it is fair to question whether the usage of "you" in the 4 freedoms should apply to companies or just people. Also, the freedoms apply to the user. Maybe the creator needs a freedom as well: The freedom to not have your labor exploited

@seanI think Gab really is pushing the issue on why we need something to add to OSS to protect ourselves from having our FOSS work co-opted. Would Commons Clause (https://commonsclause.com/) help here?

If you are in #chicago and interested in #kotlin or #android, join CKUG tonight for a talk on Coroutine-first Android architecture: https://www.meetup.com/Chicago-Kotlin/events/261831316/

@schestowitzI think there might be some misunderstanding here. Google's only connection to #kotlin is using it in the android APIs, which seems to be unrelated to this project. Kotlin is owned by jetbrains, and this work seems to be about providing kotlin runtime as a Debian package for the jetbrain IDE and third party build system Gradle to use as a depedency.

@sirCopyleft doesn't even stop for-profit companies from profiting from OSS developers' unpaid labor. It just makes them give _something_ back to the community, and they can't fathom the thought.

@nergalThe way it is done here is not gdpr compliant, which is the biggest data collection / tracking policy our industry has at the moment, and compliance should be the bare minimum in this regard. Also, I would say tracking and collection are two sides of the same coin.

@nergal I agree, but in practice, trackers are one of the most commonly used "leech points" for collection. Facebook abuses cookies to track your habits all over the web. This is why I think the issues are closely linked.

@jalcineeven worse than calenders is the state of tasks services. Other than #nextcloud, I have not found any tasks services that allow caldav clients.

@JoYoI think this is why federation is a key piece of the puzzle. Using the same identity across all different got hosts gives us the social features of github @downey @rysiek
