Submitting a manuscript through Wiley's #ResearchExchange was a nicely hassle-free process compared to #ScholarOne. I can see why they are ditching the old one for this. My only complaint is the lack of support for #LaTeX documents. Converting .tex/.pdf to .docx is not fun when MS Word does not understand vector graphics, tables or umlaut characters (e.g. äö).On a related note, my final PhD article is submitted. Time to go full-blast on the synopsis.#PhDchat #academia #research

I forgot the city had installed these engraved historic maps of Helsinki in one of the parks in the city center. So much has changed during the two past centuries.#map #cartography

This is making the rounds on Finnish social media.A large association for Finnish construction companies, #Rakennusteollisuus, decided that they needed an English version of their website but apparently they didn't want to pay an actual #translator so just used some free #LLM with hilarious results. They've fixed it now, but for a short while there was some comedy gold to be found.P.s. I didn't find these, I've no idea who did.

It is now illegal to transmit personal information of EU citizens to cloud infrastructure in the #US as they won't be protected by the #GDPR.Many European service providers will have to move quickly to avoid fines, but eventually #EU data will be held in the EU, benefiting companies in Europe, and supporting #DigitalSovereignty. That means AWS, Azure, Google and iCloud can lose a sizeable chunk of their customer base if no moves are made. I am all for it.https://berthub.eu/articles/posts/you-can-no-longer-base-your-government-and-society-on-us-clouds/

❓ What is edge-bundling? Edge bundling is a technique where flows going from nearby points in a similar direction get bundled together to reduce visual clutter, and it can help with legibility of complex flow data.

🙋 Why should I use it? a) To improve legibility of large and complex flow data between origins and destinations. A map that is not clear is worthless. b) To make cooler visualisations. c) Because it is fun! d) All of the above!

📜 🧙♂️ How do I use the tool? 1. Run the tool as instructed in the README.md file from the repository. 2. Wait for the edges to be bundled. 3. Visualise your data!

I am really excited to hear that @qgis is gearing up for their next major point release, 4.0!Having been a user since 2014, the whole project is a testament to the awesome power of #FOSS software. A sizable chunk of my daily work would not be possible without #QGIS.https://blog.qgis.org/2025/04/17/qgis-is-moving-to-qt6-and-launching-qgis-4-0/

Maybe you or somebody you know has a #Windows10 computer, which works perfectly fine, but will lose support on October 14 because it cannot be updated to Windows 11 for hardware support reasons. Please, do not turn the computer into unnecessary e-waste but keep using it and give it a new life by installing #Linux on it. There are plenty of advantages in doing so, the biggest one being it's waaaayyy cheaper. For more, see:https://endof10.org/#EndOf10 #Windows #eWaste #sustainability

@internetarchive Archival of web pages enables a lot of interesting research regarding digital, societal and political issues, as it enables us to see how certain matters were discussed by different parties at different times, what framing was used, which positions were considered mainstream and niche etc.

I wonder what the situation is with #Mastodon apps for #Android these days. At one point, the official app was very bare bones, and folks recommended using #Moshidon or #Megalodon for better access to the full Mastodon experience. Is it the same still?I have been using Moshidon for a while now, and I used to run Tusky. Having checked the last update, Moshidon got updated last summer, the official app a few days ago, and Tusky in September.
