I totally glossed over the fact that a new high-tech product's price was cut in half -- from $3000 to $1500 -- within two years of its introduction, as if that was a normal occurrence in the '90s... which it was: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LdPk1p71J8A

Old IBM terminal with "battleship" keyboard still in use in a Canadian Tire store in 2018.

Funny error message from old Intel webcam software. Apparently in 2001 they never thought anyone would have more than 2 GB of RAM in Windows XP, so on my ThinkPad X60 with 4 GB of RAM (3 GB usable by the OS) it wraps around and reports a negative number.

Magazine ad for Momo wheels, circa 1991. The guy with the VW was apparently more impressed by his car than his girl, and the guys with the motorcycle weren't looking at her, either...

We spent 30 years trying to get away from pan-and-scan, only to need it again when widescreen video is cut up into little clips and posted on vertical video platforms, and you only see half of a conversation because the other person is completely out of frame: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/UERp9mhK45Q

And now I somehow accidentally on purpose ended up with two Oreck XL vacuums, both thrift store finds. Both probably from the '90s, and still working fine. They're super simple and lightweight, and that's what I like about them. No need for a height adjustment for different surfaces -- there isn't one. Very easy to maneuver, even without being self-propelled. Reportedly the airborne dust output when in use is rather high, but they have bags with better filtration to cut down on that.

I've been looking for this model, but I have yet to see one -- yes, it's a vacuum cleaner with a built-in FM radio!

I've seen many TV owner's manuals, but only one which tells you how you can use an AM radio or camera to check if the remote control is working.

The Computer Palace was a store in Eugene, Oregon which had one of the largest selections of Atari computer software in the Northwest, and in their ads they proclaimed that the Atari 800XL "beats the 64 hands down".

I wanted to have a Super VHS tape, so I got this on eBay for $10. It has raw footage of someone's amateur production, including multiple takes of each scene. I found him on LinkedIn; he studied Drama and Communications at the University of New Orleans in the early 2000s, and that's likely what this is from. It does have Linear Time Code (LTC) on one of the audio tracks, but it's actually just a standard VHS recording, not S-VHS.

You may have heard about YouTube applying "AI upscaling" to some Shorts, and maybe even some regular videos. Now they admit to using "Super Resolution, which uses Google-built technology to make low resolution uploads look like they were filmed in HD", along with "audio enhancements", and have quietly added an option to disable it on your channel: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/16619284They insist viewers can also turn it off on their end, but this way disables it for everyone watching your videos.

Today marks one year and 14,000 miles with my 2024 Nissan Versa. So far the only maintenance has been two oil changes and tire rotations, and a little bit of grease to fix a squeaky clutch pedal. And no, the boat isn't mine. Photos taken on a Sony DSC-H9 Cyber-shot camera from 2007.
