I’ve long suspected that conservatives were resting their accusations against Joe #Biden on evidence that was completely manufactured since, as far as I could tell, over these years far too few had taken it seriously enough to look into it and actually see if it wasn’t completely counterfeit.Today #HunterBiden didn’t do himself any favors in my eyes by addressing the press with a statement that confirmed that evidence that his attackers had been throwing around were indeed legitimate. All of these are numbskulls who we shouldn’t let anywhere near power.#USPolitics #impeachment

@BeAware The key is that #ActivityPub is basically a public broadcast system. It’s like standing on a street corner with a bull horn broadcasting your content. As you broadcast data publicly it’s out there for anybody to use.And it’s really important that users of this platform realize that.

It’s pretty striking to me that this is a a reporter reporting on what another reporter said, including what the other reporter said about other reporters, and… it reflects pretty poorly on #journalism really. There’s seem to be this unfortunate trend of reporters kind of making themselves the story instead of just reporting on the world, and this article takes it up to 11.Living in a time when people have trouble finding factual accuracy coming out of the press, when people are losing so much faith in the press, this kind of thing really highlights one of the major problems in the stylistic evolution that’s been playing out.#Trump himself ends up being almost a side note in such a story covering reporters’ opinions front and center.

@kgw the Supreme Court’s honor and function comes down the contents of their rulings, not their lawn ornaments. It’s really foolish to ignore what they actually do–which I get it, it takes work to read!–and instead read superficially into individual spouse’s choices of decor. But it does make for sensational stories without having to do much actual work.

@ginaintheburg I utterly disagree because the idea that the laws we are expected to live under can only be understood by the elite is problematic on so many levels ranging from philosophical promotion of democratic principles through the very practical issue of just knowing the rules of our daily lives.Further, it’s very frequently appreciated in legal circles that our laws are to be interpreted based on common understandings of the text.So I would encourage you to rethink your stance that only experts can judge our laws. No, we should absolutely not accept such a position.

@BeAware this is an ax I grind because people need to be aware:NO, there is no way to make your posts private so that there’s no way for anyone to see them without your permission.Anyone posting to Fediverse need to be aware that by virtue of how this thing is engineered, there is absolutely no guarantee of such privacy.A lot of people are posting things they think are private when they’re not, and I find that hugely problematic.

@michaelI don’t know how to conceptualize the story, though. It sounds to me like (bear with me) the proposal is to recenter microblogging around long-form content, by which they mean linking out to longform content elsewhereThat is full of contradictions, though, both in the conflict between micro- and long- and in longform being on the outside, not the center.I WISH there would be a recentering around long-form content, but this doesn’t sound like that.@johnonolan

“This case is not about whether States can disarm people who threaten others. States have a ready mechanism for disarming anyone who uses a firearm to threaten physical violence: criminal prosecution.” – ThomasFolks saying #Thomas voted to arm abusers miss that he emphasizes the exact opposite.Instead, he voted to maintain the rights of the innocent, which is a pretty different story.https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/23pdf/22-915_8o6b.pdf#SCOTUS #USPolitics

@jensimmonsI’d like to see more use out of #IPFS since it’s such a powerful platform for distributed content and database operations.Relatedly, I would like to see more native embrace of cryptographic features like Web of trust and signing of content in these days of AI generation and questions over the trustworthiness of sources. It might be interesting if the browsing process involved checking signing keys of content to see who has certified the content as genuine.

@Nonilex well the question isn’t whether Trump is immune from all acts during his presidency. Both sides in the argument agree that he’s not.The question is about criminal prosecution over official legal acts. It’s an important distinction that’s too often missed.#Trump #SCOTUS #USPolitics

For anyone who cares about Elon #Musk , videos like this by Everyday Astronaut are critical to, well, criticize.Notice how the host prompts Elon. The host puts out these ideas and asks Elon to confirm them. That’s really how the mythology around Musk is built. He’s not asking for it, people are projecting it onto him. And so much stuff that people complain about Musk over come down to things that are being projected onto him. And for his sake, he’s rich enough to just take it.And this is a lesson because it can also be applied #Trump.Rightly or wrongly, these are public figures that are loved and hated based on what is being projected onto them, not their own stuff.I think it’s really important to recognize this phenomenon, and it goes both ways: If you love Musk/Trump you need to realize that what you love might be a projection and not actually part of the person. If you hate them, same thing. It’s academically really interesting. It’s practically really sad.https://youtu.be/aFqjoCbZ4ik#USpolitics

I’ve heard it said that if you don’t vote with whichever party then you are a coward. I think that’s exactly backwards, and even reflects poorly all the person making that argument. It doesn’t take much courage to go with the group.Instead I go the other way: no matter which party you might prefer in general, it takes courage to say they nominated a moron, and fortunately the other party also nominated a loser, so no matter what the US is going to slog through these next few years. In my opinion the courageous position is to say no, you nominated a moron, and I’m not going to give you my vote. We’re going to be okay I guess, whether you win or not, but I’m not going to let you assume that you have my vote if you insist on nominating a moron. You should have nominated someone better. You should have nominated someone worthy of my vote. Do better next time. That’s the state of #USPolitics . As South Park said, big douche versus turd sandwich. So screw both #Democrats and #Republicans. Neither of you managed to nominate someone worth voting for, so I’m voting for my dog.To give either party our votes is to sign on to their nomination of garbage people. Let’s not. Let’s say that they need to actually nominate worthwhile administrators. But more practically, let’s focus on #Congress. No matter who wins this election, they’re going to suck, but we can still express ourselves through our representation in Congress, and that’s honestly how it should be anyway.Check out your representatives. See how they have actually been voting, and vote them out if they have been letting you down. That’s really where our focus should be anyway. Not on which jerk ends up in the Oval Office.(But thank God #Biden is on his way out, as he has been terrible for #science in the US, which has not gotten nearly enough attention from the press.)

@xtaldave wow, axios has apparently shifted to not even bothering to tell the whole story, devolving into only the processed bullet points that it puts at the top. Notice very strikingly that it didn't bother with full quotes in context.Axios is trash. We should all see the red flags when reading this kind of clickbait headline and sensationalized story. This is not good for the country. #journalism #USPolitics

@realcaseyrollins A lot of people are missing at the moment that the safeguard against unconstitutional actions is NOT through #SCOTUS but through the Congress, and more importantly, through voters electing representatives who will react to unconstitutionality appropriately.SCOTUS has no enforcement power against the Executive Branch. That was left to the Congresss. Both SCOTUS and Congress can and should judge the President in different ways, but at the end of the day, it's up to the people we elect to Congress to react to whatever has been found about what the president has been doing.Far too many congresspeople shirk their duties by pointing fingers at the other two branches when they're the only ones with the actual power to act, and that's critical to the US system.@Phil @interfluidity #USPolitics #Trump

@sj_zero Yes, exactly. We have so many promoting the norm that a voter HAS to vote, and if they don't then they're actually voting for the other guy. If only we could push back against that common rhetoric we have a good chance of getting better candidates and better government in the end. When the norm is that the parties have to actually run people worth voting for, or else voters will stay home, then they'll be motivated to stop running such trash candidates. You can see how we ended up with #Trump vs #Harris as the two parties relied on opposition to the other rather than actually putting forward quality candidates.#USPolitics #Democracy #Democrats #Republicans

Many #Trump supporters take the stance that he was never ACTUALLY going to impose tariffs, that they were mere negotiating threats, and anyone who doesn't know that is an idiot.Meanwhile #Harris was criticized for not laying out specifics of what she would do in office.Funnily, then, that was a contest between someone who **wouldn't** say what they **would** do versus someone who **would** said what they **wouldn't** do.What a time to be alive.#USPolitics #kamala

@realcaseyrollins The key is that the American left needs to talk not about opposing getting rid of murderers and drug dealers but about the processes by which we do that fairly and legally. And they have to talk about it in a coherent, accessible, and most importantly, accurate way.The #MAGA crowd rose in an environment where the left stopped addressing them and explaining the real answers to their concerns, instead dismissing them out of hand... and giving those votes and minds over to the likes of #Trump. The left has so much of civics on their side, but they continue to ignore that opportunity, allowing the right to march forward in ignorance.#USPolitics

@realcaseyrollins reporting says Hegseth is the one who called for the presentation, and he did a great job presenting it.But then #Trump insisted on stealing the spotlight, and he looked awful. He didn't follow military protocol and gave a presentation that was so discombobulated that he looked insane. The contrast only magnified that.So good job, Trump, you just let all of your top military brass know that their commander isn't all there mentally. They're far less likely to give benefit of the doubt for questionable orders now.#USPolitics #military

@realcaseyrollins Yes, I do think #Trump is stupid. The reason I think that is because we see him make unforced errors over and over as he loses otherwise obtainable goals, as we watch him shoot himself in the foot over and over throughout his record. From him botching his own court case that led to his felony convictions through botching negotiations for peace deals through botching trade negotiations leading to responses that he definitely said wouldn't happen, the guy keeps messing up in ways that were obviously going to happen. His record of making promises that he couldn't keep reflects a level of stupidity that is really quite striking. #USPolitics
