@lauren I would dispute that the UK Government exercises editorial control of the BBC. Its work is governed by the royal charter and complaints are are dealt with by Ofcom, just as complaints about U.S. broadcasters are made to the FCC.

@lauren Funding comes from licence fees for domestic BBC services. The licence fee is set by the Government though.(World Service used to be paid for by a Foreign Office fund, so that is certainly more direct).Funding is one thing but that is NOT editorial control.

@lauren This is a very weak argument by the broadcasters in an attempt to maintain an audience. If public safety were there goal, then convert the MW band to use Digital Radio Mondiale and single frequency networks to get better coverage with good audio quality with the same radiated power.Also, I can't removing AM as savings much on a $40K vehicle (the average price these days)

@lauren HD radio is a VHF augmentation. (and works ... in a fashion).Europe replaced FM broadcasting on VHF with COFDM (a far superior system) quite successfully.
