@dammn "A third grade teacher in Cupertino, Calif., reportedly hosted a lesson in which students were required to identify aspects of their identity that were either privileged or oppressed." - excerpt from the article linked below. Is this for real? Whatever be someone's agenda good or bad but should kids so young be forced to participate in such an exercise? How is this legal? Where are the consequences?https://nypost.com/2021/01/15/elementary-school-teacher-tells-students-to-select-their-oppressive-identities/

@onan I am only guessing but it seems to me that for most people the top row would have more things than the one below. Maybe not. Also, what is difficult to decide is whether the things we think we can do something about is going to get affected in any tangible way, cause if it is not going to give tangible results maybe it should be categorized as things we can do nothing about.

@syscrash Does pihole only block content based on blacklisted url by not resolving the DNS or does it do something else?Theoretically speaking if I had all the blacklisted url, could I simply append those to /etc/hosts (currently I have 49714 domains in there) and call it a day? Or would it not be as effective because pi hole has a trick up its sleeves over and beyond DNS blocking?

@syscrash Thanks. Is it able to block YouTube ads as well? If yes then I will look into setting it up for my entire network. I had in the past tried to host it via on my Ubuntu Touch phone but for some reason the blocking wasn't as effective, maybe I should pay more attention this time around with the setup process and probably on a raspberry pi.

@syscrash Well then SkyTube on Android and FreeTube on Linux it is. The /etc/hosts blocking method is very effective against egregious and privacy invasive domains already plus I don't allow third party cookies at all, I think this pretty much gives me a similar coverage as Pi hole without having to maintain anything, except for updating the hosts file from time to time.

Checkout this single place where you can get access to several open source self hostable instances of frontends for a variety of internet services. If what you want to do is not security critical but can't host your own instance you can use these.https://snopyta.org/

@default8080 Why do universities feel the need to educate their students on these matters only? I mean don't they have accounting, computer architecture, linguistics, thermodynamics, or something else to cover before the term ends? Talk about misplaced priorities. What happens when students graduate without real world skills and are not able to find jobs? Oh, is this their contingency plan? Far sighted must say.

@alex Not to spoil your mood but in college days I had a roommate who used to smoke weed a lot which affected his memory quite considerably. We were not in touch after college till one day I received a call that he was apprehended by police after he was seen running on the streets completely naked. This is an extreme case for sure but the doctor feels weed was responsible, others in his group also report very poor recall after a few years of heavy usage. But this could be a coincidence too.

@default8080 I have not read the article you have linked there but speaking from my experience as an observer on that site (iirc they allow access without an account as well), they are trying and to a certain extent have built a cult around their platform. It is most definitely not a neutral platform in terms of religion perhaps it fares better in other aspects. I get by religious people in general without any issues but people on their were a bit spooky to say the least.

@default8080 The fact that they did not want to federate with rest of the fediverse should itself be enough to cast long shadows of doubts on their real intentions. In terms of cancel culture, they aren't much different from the left loonies who want to cancel just about everyone who doesn't agree with them.Conspiracy theories is another thing that's very problematic there. I am not talking about theories that lack enough evidence to be taken note of but blatant lies and misinformation. #Cult

@default8080 Well said its indoctrination for sure. I wonder what do religious people make of these assertions? Do they ask things like how does the writer know that Christ is about to take dominion over any place anytime soon? Do they ask for any religious backing to these claims? If Christ is going to take dominion anyways what will be the point of building "our own system" and what is he waiting for before making an intervention? If I was religious I would surely ask these questions and more.

@default8080 The line is quite clear except to those who are susceptible to crossing it. I really wish we knew why do so many people fall for these cults and what might have prevented them from falling for it and seeing it for what it is.In this regard I think our education system has failed us quite clearly. A good education should prevent anyone from falling for any religious or social cult and yet we see scientists and engineers even becoming so engrossed with obvious predatory cults.

@Secftblgirl Does being a "woman journalist" somehow make them more vulnerable for their journalism? If not then why are they even talking about woman or not? I sure can imagine scenarios where a woman journalist would be more at risk but this screenshot does not address that anyways. Its sickening how its become a trend to add gender or race in order to garner more sympathy from unwitting readers, its not gonna fare well in the long run.

@Secftblgirl Few years back something like this would be hard to believe but after the pandemic this doesn't sound unreasonable at all. In fact it seems only natural that they would try to do something like this. Problem is that the right also doesn't seem to be able to get its acts together. The right looks around for approval a bit too much which renders them weak. The right also is unable to put good speakers except for some good exceptions and is largely "unconcerted".

@ChristiJunior @TheQuQu This is a problem that more and more democracies are going to face. Journalists are no longer just presenting facts but telling you how to interpret it and what exactly to think. Frankly it isn't that they were better in the past its just that in today's world it is easier to carry propaganda out to a more absurd level with greater ease and still get away with it. Education also hasn't prepared people for these scenarios adequately.

@ThewTheKooky Thing is I see more and more people who don't even need any deliberate attempts from someone else for them to forget or not see clear evidence if it is against the ideology they "support". They will not just support ideologies but even people who are in the same boat quite blindly. I am sure even Orwell will be surprised if he were to see the present state of affairs.

@Secftblgirl Tell you what as true as what you said is one thing we need to keep in mind is that on a global scale, you don't even have to be the alpha to be able to inflict heavy damages and still face no repercussions. If China were to invade Taiwan there is not much rest of the world will do. I am not saying they can't do, but that they won't do. Look at what happened in Hong Kong recently, what actions did the world take? Other than new FTAs with China. EU's doublespeak on FTA is just awful.
