As of today, MacStories is disallowing all known AI crawlers, including ChatGPT and Applebot. If you want to read our site, you should use a web browser or RSS.✌️

Some people in the tech community are always (and weirdly?) going to root for tech companies that don't give a shit about publishers.I've been around long enough to remember all these arguments:- "But people won't discover you without AMP!"- "They won't discover you without [insert Facebook content strategy]"- And today, "they won't find you without ChatGPT!"Guess what: we've been fine (and growing) with a website, RSS, and, most importantly, self-respect for our craft.

But what can I say: good luck building a long-term relationship with "readers" who "discover" you via ChatGPT or Arc Browser summaries and hallucinations?🍀

Regulation in this space cannot come soon enough.AI companies that want to scrape the web for training purposes, or use their bots to summarize webpages, should follow a strict set of guidelines with identifiable user-agents and IP addresses.Publishers should have a right to opt out of any AI access, request details as to whether their copyrighted content is included in any model, and if so, request that its gets removed and the model re-trained.Hopefully the EU's AI Act will help.

Most of all, we need to let go of this notion that open web = okay for commercial companies to scrape, ingest, and train their models. If I wanted to open an English school, I would have opened a school to teach the English language. But I didn't.I have a website, which is free to read, but my copyrighted material is mine and shouldn't serve as the foundation of any other commercial product.I wish more people would understand this concept.

At MacStories, we won't stand for Meta's dehumanizing, harmful moderation practices.Fuck them and everyone who builds their business upon a semblance of "free speech" to ostracize minorities and all kinds of humans. For this reason, we're leaving Threads and Instagram behind. You can read about our decision here, and find some links to support different organizations today: https://www.macstories.net/stories/macstories-wont-stand-for-metas-dehumanizing-and-harmful-moderation-policies/

Things took a MAJOR turn for Apple's App Store:- In the Epic v. Apple case, the court has found Apple in willful violation of a previous injunction on anticompetitive conduct - Effective immediately, Apple can no longer impose commissions on purchases made via external links or have a say on link placement - An Apple VP lied under oath and the court is referring to the U.S. Attorney to investigate whether criminal contempt proceedings are appropriate🍿 Filing: https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/25924283-epic-v-apple-contempt-order/

The revised text of the 'Scare Screen' you get when making a purchase via a link was a Tim Cook idea – telling people that Apple is not responsible for the security of web purchases. (on a personal note: LOL) "tells ppl its dangerous and they are leaving the app store."

"Apple’s response to the Injunction strains credulity. ""[Apple] continued its anticompetitive conduct solely to maintain its revenue stream.""Remarkably, Apple believed that this Court would not see through its obvious cover-up"And the banger conclusion:"As always, the coverup made it worse. For this Court, there is no second bite at the apple."

Unpopular reality check:Most people in real life just call it Apple TV. They know what they mean. "The Apple one".Renaming the service to Apple TV is cleaner, and totally a non-issue. Only nerds obsess about naming these things. Nobody in real life will ever say the sentence "The TV app for Apple TV on Apple TV". Only people here do.
