@stux Sadly no. They are bound to the sea. Maybe we could send warships in pieces, but so long as Turkey keeps the Bosporus closed, no warships other than their own go in or out of the Black Sea.

I grew up with educators who would slap our hands (if they could) if we used our fingers to do math.Why?!?I've got ten digits that are awesome at keeping track of things, even though I'm pretty decent at math.Fingers are great! I encourage everyone who was ever shamed like I was about using their hands to count to unabashedly count on your fingers and toes.

@DuvetGecko @CppGuy @hollie The ancient near-eastern peoples of Babylon and Assyria used the joints on a hand for counting (thumb excluded), to give 12 per hand. Which is not coincidentally how many hours make up a half-day. A whole day is two hands of hours.

My last newsletter was in October, but I didn't stop because Substack is a Nazi bar. I had to pause for a health reason. Now that I'm mending, I wanted to restart the newsletter, but Substack is a fucking Nazi bar. Boo. Fuck. I hate this so much. It's like Yahoo! 2002 all over again.Options: Ghost. Wordpress. Buttondown.I have concerns and reservations about all of those, but I won't be using Substack for my newsletter any longer.

Substack is/was nice because I could set the site to FREE and ignore all the upsale efforts to monetize. Leeching off a Nazi is better than paying for drinks at one, but the company still stinks.Ghost is pay-to-play. I have no intentions of ever monetizing my newsletter, so with Ghost it would always operate at a loss. Features I like tho are better website customizations with basic templates (e.g. can't do rel="me" in Substack, but is okay in Ghost)

I thought I liked the comments on Substack, but nevermind. They're not that great. I honestly got more engagement on FB comments than on Substack (a different problematic website I loathe and frequent as little as possible) .There is also the issue of what do do about Substack subs I currently pay for.

@grammargirl I'm disciplining myself to one per day, but even though it's only week 1, one of the interesting things I'm already noticing is how grammatical rules I've learned unconsciously, either through reading or writing practice. And how many I have not. 🙂 Thank you again!

I'm so sick of the web not working. I have to use uBlockOrigin and uBlacklist and pihole and a custom host file to make the web barely usable. And when I do that, some websites break and I have to figure out if it broke at the DNS, the ad blocker, or the tracking blocker.And when it breaks for my WFH spouse, I get panicky, because is it Windows, or pihole, or Firefox being shitty?The web used to work. I'm not misremembering that. I want that again. Not whatever shit this is.

While I'm venting, phones! Cellular phones used to make calls, send texts, flip, have an antenna and fit in my pocket.The didn't play music or games, or show me cat videos, or constantly spam me with phishing attempts and campaign begging.And now they want to put ML/AI into my phone. I get needing a smart phone, even some apps are tolerable, but the cruft is so onerous it makes the whole thing feel like an unwelcome brick in my pants pocket.
