@TruthSandwich @futurebird The survival of capitalism is predicated on one central thing: For it to survive capitalists must be *wrong*, and the competitive pressure of capitalism must *forever* continue failing to drive margins towards zero. Why? Because driving down margins towards zero in a system with private property inherently requires driving labour costs towards zero.As it happens, few people had as strong a belief in the "success" of capitalism as Marx in this respect.

@TruthSandwich @Alon @futurebird It's quite telling when you first argue for regulated capitalism, and then get all worked up over someone who by European standards is a mildly centre-left (at best) social democrat. If you want to look at "somewhat functioning" capitalism, such as in Scandinavia, we all have economic systems far to the left of anything Bernie has pushed.

@TruthSandwich @Alon @futurebird And yet what he doesn't actually push anything even close to as radical as Sweden or Norway.

@pre Docker? Get a Docker container with an older version of PHP and bind-mount the directories you have Nextcloud installed to into it?

A whole lot of discussions (HN...) on LLMs like GPT etc. ends with me questioning whether most humans can reason moreso than the ability of LLMs to do it.Full of people parroting the line that they don't reason, who immediately go silent if you ask them to explain what reasoning *is* or how we measure it. Ironically there is clearly often no reasoning behind those statements.(I think the answer is "depends". First define what reasoning is to you)#LLM #GPT #chatgpt

Finding a definition of reasoning that excludes LLMs that won't also exclude a whole lot of humans is hard, though. And not because people are dumb, but because most of us are not very good at thinking about thinking.I think *at the moment* the best bet for those who want to dismiss LLMs as not-reasoning is to focus on the lack of longer-term memory and the heavy limits on "short-term memory" short context provides, but it's also clear those limitations are not inherent and won't last.

I am afraid I might just have to write my own X11 window manager.

As it turns out, the first step is to reconfigure things so I can run *without* a wm. Basically, ensure my wm isn't what's keeping the x session running. That's easy. Once that's done, since I already run sxhkd adding a keybinding to swap back and forth between an in progress wm and something working is easy....(Yes, I'm procrastinating again)

Why *shouldn't* I have my own window manager?

It's tempting to basically just connect a DrB server to an X socket, so all the window management logic can be written in individual separate #Ruby scripts "client side". DrB makes Ruby server code extremely crash resistant (you can ensure any exceptions are forwarded to the client), and coupled with using sxhkd to handled the key and mouse events the amount of code is absolutely minimal.

As much as I like neon, it strikes me that #cyberpunk that is true to the literary origins would be more likely to be of the "I have ten minutes to spare, a roll of gorilla tape, and endless amounts of wire - let's fix up my workspace" kind than the polished, shiny stuff often described as cyberpunk.(I had ten minutes and a roll of gorilla tape)

My physiotherapist has just sent me a message asking me if "tomoz" is ok for me, and the language purist in me is sorely tempted to find another physiotherapist.

Came downstairs after showering to find the new proprietor has moved in and was lounging. This is not her home (he says, knowing she comes and goes as she pleases - she comes by regularly)She'd snuck in before I closed the door - but clearly she didn't mind given the rain...#cats #catsofmastodon

I'm terribly late to this, because I for some reason didn't find time for Star Trek: Discovery season 4 until recently, but I've immensely enjoyed how it's turned into the Andromeda we ought to have had. Bonus: No Kevin Sorbo (the rest of the cast deserved better (please don't tell me any of the rest of them have turned into equally large asshats))#startrek #andromeda

It strikes me that almost any technical architecture can be recast as a combination of mailboxes, queues, and cache.(note: I'm not suggesting this is *optimal*, and the form queues that can meet latency requirements takes varies greatly)

Best writing procrastination outcome: My self-written text-editor is getting steadily better... "Must add just this one extra essential function to help me write, and I'll be *so much more productive*". It's a total lie, of course. But it does feel satisfying.#amwriting

Running out of editor improvements to use as procrastination to avoid writing. Contemplating designing a custom font to optimize my procrastination, I mean writing, next.I don't know *why*. I enjoy it during. I know exactly where the story is going. There are scenes I'm looking forward to writing.(I got about 1k words written yesterday, which is better than in a *long* time - how I long for when I did 3k words on average, and 11k words on the best day, for my last book)

@futurebird Southern England has a growing population of feral parakeets - nobody knows where they came from, but almost certainly released/escaped pets, hence calling them feral rather than "actually" wild. But the population is in the tens of thousands now. They're fun (and loud), but they're starting to become a potential issue for native birds here. Here are two in my local park in London during winter (excuse the horrible camera)Wikipedia has more:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feral_parakeets_in_Great_Britain
