Any recommendations for a good place to keep a philosophy blog? Preferably a place where I won't be beholden to profit-seeking corporate overlords; would be nice if it can tie in to Mastodon, but that's not a must.(I host these posts on my own website at the moment, but they get mixed up with my private entries and are basically unfindable by search engines.)

Looking for people who know something about early computing, especially in the Netherlands. Please boost and help me solve the mystery of this custom made plate that used to belong to my grandfather Bram Jan Loopstra, one of the pioneers of Dutch computing. What do the pictures mean? #computing #history

The binary is obviously a date, 8-3-1956. That's the year that my grandfather and his collaborators finished the ARMAC computer. So my first hypothesis is that it's a commemorative plate for that. If so, the pictures may have something to do with this computer.

The words at the bottom are the motto of early modern Dutch scientist Simon Stevin. It means something like: "It's a miracle, but not a miracle", indicating the power of science to explain the seemingly miraculous.

@freemo Well, they took that title from Simon Stevin, a famous Dutch scientist from the Scientific Revolution, whose motto this was. I suspect the plate is quoting Stevin, not a magazine for sceptics. ;-)

So my toot about my grandfather's early computing plate blew up, and since Mastodon doesn't group boost/like notifications the way Twitter does, I've received some 2500 notifications over the past 24 hours. If you've been trying to communicate with me, sorry, I probably won't have seen it! ๐Ÿ˜… I suppose I'll just have to sit this storm out. (It's gratifying to see the level of interest, of course!)

@misty Did you also read Bob et Bobette (Suske en Wiske), or is that more a Flemish/Dutch thing? But being Dutch I can confirm that clearly, all famous comics come from Belgium and France. ๐Ÿ˜„

Well, that's it! I've uploaded what I think will have to be the final version of my #IFComp game. The deadline is tomorrow, but I have a busy day ahead of me, so this is where I'll leave it.About four days from now, on October 1st, the competition will open, and you'll be able to play...Xanthippe's Last Night with Socrates.#InteractiveFiction

The web version of Outlook that my university runs now auto-corrects '1st' and '2nd' by making not the last but the first two symbols into superscript. Brilliant programming, guys. ๐Ÿ˜‚

@jmac By now, I'm very curious what the problem with this sentence is supposed to be. Is dim sum supposed to not be a countable noun? Or is it just that you don't eat it with soy sauce? Or something else?

4th session of a 3:16 campaign yesterday, a #TTRPG by Gregor Hutton about soldiers sent into space to kill absolutely all aliens.Sergeant Linda is a happy, motherly woman courageously protecting her men. But this third mission took place on a planet of cute hobbits, and as her moral compass clashed with threats by her superiors, she killed and killed and killed the innocent. And was promoted to lieutenant."But at least I don't enjoy it" doesn't mean much, and she knows it. Whereto from here?

We're also starting to learn more about the player characters, and why they left Terra, which is supposedly a paradise. There's Cyrax with his gambling debts. There's Khรขrne, whose reaction to injustice has always been ultra-violence. And Linda, well, turns out she has two kids, but their father has custody. (Why? How? We don't know yet.) "I couldn't take care of my kids in the normal way, so I decided to care for them by killing the alien threat."
