I still have no idea how Mastodon works but I’m trying to see who other people are following and it feels like a giant take home interview in distributed systems internals.

“How do I see other people people are following on different servers”“You have to do depth-first search down the server tree”“Did you just tell me to go fuck myself”

I’d love to do a technical deep dive blog post on how Mastodon works from an #engineering perspective and contrast it to centralized social networks I’ve used and worked on. I am looking for the best resources, code snippets, and blog posts that best explain the #distributed aspects. One example is an diagram I saw recently that explains how a federated timeline is populated. All pointers appreciated and happy to start with the mastodon repo. 🙏

I’ve been hesitantly looking for outward signs that Twitter engineering service quality is degrading. A few days ago I noticed that my iOS client was no longer showing the total notification count, only a tiny blue dot.Someone was in charge of that number, and now they’re gone. A website is not only technical, it’s a living organism that needs to be cared for.Corroboration from this twitter thread: https://twitter.com/adambroach/status/1591120041126174720

I am dead, I can’t believe this AI intro text I just got. If you thumb through it, there are all the usual suspects like breadth-first search and probability. Then you open the first chapter and it goes HARD on the current state of things. Then it’s back to mathematical notation like nothing happened.

Some important rules when considering adding ML to your app:1. Start building without machine learning2. Continue without machine learning3. Be blissfully unaware of concept drift, model versioning, AUC, and feature engineering 4. Turn off the computer5. Go outside and buy a small child an ice cream cone6. Sit with your beloved under the stars and, wonder at the vastness of the universe and your small role in it7. Turn the computer back on, you’re now ready to add only linear regression

There is SO much conversation about ChatGPT prompts and results and so VERY little conversation about the actual training data, model, and infrastructure that underly it. I've started to collect some of my learnings/resources on it (complete with fun prompts.) Feel free to add comments. https://gist.github.com/veekaybee/6f8885e9906aa9c5408ebe5c7e870698

New blog post: I have been pretty unhappy with the state of modern development and wanted to understand why. I did a big deep dive into memory profiling Pandas processes in Colab with data from BigQuery. We are building on millions of dependencies we don’t understand, in fragmented and proprietary cloud environments we can’t introspect.https://vickiboykis.com/2022/12/05/the-cloudy-layers-of-modern-day-programming/

As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams, he found himself rewritten in Rust for performance reasons.

On March 31, Elon said he'd open source all code to generate tweets. @adamlaiacano and I took a stab at March Madness #Recsys about what we'll find in the codebase, if it ever gets released. Take a look and fill out your own bracket. https://recsys-madness.com/

The Twitter algorithm dropped yesterday, and now it’s time to reverse-engineer. @igor and I are starting to make sense of what’s actually been released, how it compares to what the prod codebase might be and giving the released code some context. If you know #search, #recsys, or #engineering and want to contribute to make what’s been released actually consumable for public understanding, please join us, contributions welcome.https://github.com/veekaybee/awesome-twitter-algo

📚 Pretty nervous about this, but here goes. Here's a side project I've been working on for the past few months. It's called Viberary and it's a semantic search engine. It gives you book recommendations based on ✨vibes. ✨ You enter a search query like "funny scifi" and it returns a list of (hopefully!) good recommendations. https://viberary.pizza/There is an about page that explains the data, model, etc. It's still pretty early stages but it's been a labor of love for me.
