@futurebird @idzie Many childhood memories of plucking apples and figs *very carefully*, first turning them around by the stem.Lots of times the other side had been hollowed out and there was a huge European hornet or two just chewing away.

@discatte @NanoRaptor The one on the right looks like a fat-tail sheep...

@futurebird I'm an only child, but I think I may have traumatized my spouse and child when it comes to pomegranates.(If left unchecked, I will simply eat them all. We now have rules, with the alternative being that I maintain a ready supply of pomegranates while they're in season.)

@futurebird Having watched insects, I feel like they spend about half their time cleaning themselves anyhow.

@futurebird I... hmm. I don't know if that would be as good[1] as the classic mix.[1] for very specific meaning of "good"

@futurebird On the other hand, I will generally prefer a piece of dark chocolate dipped in salted peanut butter to a Reese's peanut butter cup.

@JoBlakely I'm confused about how this would happen. What kind of application and networking architecture would lead to *local* outages of a globally available app?I suspect this is mere coincidence, or perhaps (as one person suggested) a stunt on Grindr's part.

@NanoRaptor It's honestly hard to think of qualitatively worse things to make IoT than what we already have.At this point it's all just a matter of waiting for the bad vulns to show up.

@futurebird I have to do 1, and it only works if I put on the right kind of music (or noise background) that will keep my ADHD-ass brain just the right level of activated (and also act as a context cue to remind me that I'm in "work mode").If I try 2, I end up not wanting to take a break because I'm in the groove. :-) I'm also worried I won't be able to get back into the task mindset. Should try it more often though.3 is bad for me because I often want a break every 30 seconds to 5 minutes.

@futurebird Interestingly, the Mastodon UI does not let me submit the poll with no boxes checked.

@futurebird @clayfoot I had to have "the cheese talk" with my kid the other day. She didn't know that pecorino romano (and similar) came in great honking wheels like this.

@futurebird It's this sort of forced admiration for "the big cheese" that led to today's centralization of power in the executive branch (or perhaps merely prefigured it, I can't really speak to the causation here).

Man, rolled oats smell *really* good. How did I not know this?I guess I assumed that the smell of flavored oatmeal packets (e.g. "brown sugar and cinnamon") came from the additives. But it doesn't! Oats just smell that way!

@futurebird @byakushin We have a binocular dissecting scope at home and it's pretty reasonable for bugs. The mag is only 1.7-3.4x (total) but it's great to have room to manipulate samples by hand above the stage. We got it from a bio dept that was replacing all their scopes with fancy new ones. This one is many decades old, cast iron. It doesn't even have a lamp — there's a mirror for backlighting. :-)

@MCDuncanLab @futurebird @BenjaminHCCarr They also describe this occurring in near-starvation circumstances (no sucrose), but I suppose they could be incorrectly discounting the fungus' ability to break down the agar for energy.I'm curious, what would you need to see to find such an experiment compelling? (Absent the discovery of specific biochemical pathways for harvesting the energy.)

@futurebird Yeah, a giant fish isn't a cryptid, it's just a fish being Very Successful (and yes, possibly a bit terrifying, but not a cryptid).

@cjd It's hard to even compare these things head-to-head. If you're *just* talking about "how do we power the grid", nuclear has some benefits. But solar+battery allows you to change the story. Microgrids, burst capacity, distributed generation and storage, even individual homes being self-sufficient. We may not *need* a huge grid once this moves far enough.

@futurebird There was a news story about a guy who threw a stick at some young coyotes to shoo them away... and one of them fetched the stick! He did the right thing and chased them off. I don't know if I would have had the self control to do that. Puppies! 😆

@ai6yr @futurebird @cookiesinheaven I once had a whole bunch of tiny ants get into a bag of candied ginger on the countertop.I put it in the freezer to kill them, thinking I could then shake them off the ginger (and then use a better container).A few hours later I took it out, let it warm up... and the ants "came back to life". 😑 I had to sort them out the hard way.
