@simon I watched a couple episodes of The Americans, but it didn’t connect like The Diplomat. The writing, acting, cinematography all really well done. So many good characters. I may give The Americans another shot. Also watching the Berlin Station, Spy Among Friends, and Beyond Paradise. But, on slow watch mode.

@simon Hands down I’d recommend Hover. I used some mid-sized domain registrars and all turned into nightmares. Hover focusses on being highly competent at one thing and does it insanely well.

@clive has a good piece on he the need for actual human writing and creation and “AI” won’t cut it for many things - [AI “Model Collapse” Shows Why Real Human Expression Is So Powerful | by Clive Thompson | Jun, 2023 | Medium](https://clivethompson.medium.com/ai-model-collapse-shows-why-real-human-expression-is-so-powerful-e2c83fe817f6)This fits into my belief system that a person exploring options finding new improved options for given constraints and contexts, the LLM doesn’t remotely cut it and it damages the exercising brains needed to work through it.

@debs I had a playlist in Tidal that finished and went to the home screen to get my next background work fodder and saw her photo and born and died dates. This one definitely hurts.

@steveportigal @clive Interesting… I’d run across Neruda a bit but didn’t really get my attention until I watched the movie Mindwalk - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mindwalk

@clive @steveportigal It was a tiny art film in the early 1990s. It is a very chatty film with three characters having been through career change or currently trying to sort out the meaning of it all as they walk around Mont Saint-Michel. I have it on VHS, but haven’t seen a digital version. I saw it in a theater then watched a few times on video. It is tough to find digitally or streaming.

@migurski @Mojoe @peterme @danhon @steveportigal There is so much nuance and psychological framing in the book that just didn’t translate to screen. There was a thin attempt with it and I kept expecting it to get more fully laid out. Oddly at the same time City and the City screen adaption was out there was a somewhat similar series out set in an alt reality Berlin, which was closer to City and the City in some aspects.

@Mojoe @migurski @peterme @danhon @steveportigal I think it is out of normal streaming rotation. It is about $15 for each season on Apple TV or Amazon Prime.

@clive The big question I’ve had is how, knowing how they built their massive trove of source material for OpenAI’s LLM and not with permission could they (and Microsoft prior) claim to back any lawsuit against it around claims of copyright infringement or IP infringements. That is a goods way to lose and insane amount of money.

@clive It was one of two hunches. None of the VCs I know have put much in AI and they also sat out digital coin (but in on some “distributed ledger that is sustainable”). I had a gap in knowledge with the hunch I stated.

@clive Reading the OpenAI announcement again and seeing Greg Brockman removed as chairman and off the board completely, but still president reporting to the CEO. The other thing that jumped out is how internal the board is. Most are from OpenAI and it is a small board. Not sure if the full board wasn’t listed.

@simon @benjedwards This Ben Edwards piece is really good.Have you seen the Jeremy Howard strong hunch over on the bird sight. It hits some of the early conflicts around safety over commerce and why it went to a non-profit model. Also why what was shared at the event last week may have tipped things to oust sama.

@clive You are missing the lovely bad acrid aftertaste, that serve as conversation starters when weather and politics are not viable options.

@zeldman Such a great movie. About 6 years ago I was stopped at a light on a small hill in Arlington, Virginia about a half mile from the Key Bridge to DC and about four blocks from where I first lived with I moved to the DC area. I look up and there is a historical marker in front of a garage. Yep, the Deep Throat garage.

@zeldman About a year back I was paying attention to the CSS Day in Amsterdam and blown away with the leaps and bounds CSS has made. It got me back in a playing with things a bit. I have a deep appreciation for CSS (JS, not so much) and the more that can be done with CSS the better in my book.
