@brettmNoise Canceling is a mic feature that keeps background noise from being picked up and transmitted with your call. It does not apply to the speaker part of the earbuds.

@brettmNever heard of it but I'll look for it. I have only ever seen them advertise noise canceling in regards to mic. Then again I do not buy extremely expensive ear buds either. I break or lose them to fast 😀

@claralistensprechen5thWelcome.This instance will be around for a while or I hope it will 😉. I work full time so I do not always have as much free time as I would like to improve the instance.I have done a lot of work to get it stable after the default installation. This has a lot to do with the fact that I do not like Ubuntu and have a lot more experience with Red Hat based GNU/Linux platforms than Debian. So I chose Rocky Linux 9 as my OS for my VPS where my instance resides. The developers of friendica use Debian based systems so I had to do some additional work to get my LAMP setup with all the PHP extensions required. I then had to trouble shoot some issues and adjust some settings for a more stable experience. The defaults are horrible.Let me know if there is anything I can do to make your experience here more comfortable.

@djThere is no such thing as a best distro, only the distro that is best for you. Personally I use only RHEL based Distros and Arch and LFS.I would much rather go through the work to install Friendica on Rocky the Open Source version of RHEL than to deal with Debian based systems again. That is just my opinion and fortunately I am competent enough to be able to make that decision. So I had to compile a few extensions from source and enable a few additional repos. A small price to pay to have an environment that I am more comfortable in.

@rlstone4demsSo you believe that Issac Asimov, Anne McCaffrey, Robert Asprin, George R. R. Martin, Virginia C. Andrews, Mark Twain, ... and so many more just hired other writers?

@mitchconnerWhy is it a misuse of the word Kidnapped?

@mitchconnerThey would only be captured if it was a war time event, they were in a battle. You are implying that it would be impossible for a soldier to be kidnapped just because they are a soldier? If their abduction was a war crime because they were not in a battle then it could still be kidnapping.I do not know the circumstances of this event and I am not a solicitor and laws of what warrants kidnapping varies greatly on a global sense. Though unless this soldier was indeed in a battle then it very well could be a kidnapping. In regard to illegal aliens, if they are indeed illegal aliens then you would be correct. If they were nationalized citizens that are assumed to be illegal aliens just because they are Hispanic then you are not correct.

@zer0unplannedI use one service regularly that uses Cloudflare. I did not even notice it was down. If it was not for my friends at work and the global stream here I would not have ever been aware that it was down.I have considered using cloudflare for the Instance. Though I read so much negative feedback from those coming from Instances that use Cloudflare that I decided against it. It would have allowed me to open up the Instance to far more users. Not, worth it though due to the inconveniences.

@zer0unplannedThe machine I was talking about was not a personal computer, It was a mini and it had CPM on one disk, and I built a version of GNU/Linux for it. Main storage was a seperate Digital Research Tape Reel Set. It wasn't reel to reel, it had continues carts, if you are familiar.

@zer0unplannedBack in high school a representative from Digital Research was donating some Tape Cartridge Systems to my high school. I asked, jokingly, if he had a spare. He asked what I would do with it. I told him I would hook it to my computer at home. He stated that if I could write a driver to control it, he would get me one. I asked for the spec sheets, which back then were a book and full of useful information, unlike today. I wrote the driver for my Commodore 64 and he came back to my high school to watch me demonstrate it on a school DR/ TCS with my Commodore 64. He had one of the units delivered to my house and even had an outlet put in for it. Though I could have done that myself. It was considerate of DR.
